_This novel tells two inseparable stories: these of a man, Onofre Bouvila, and a city, Barcelona, between the years 1888 and 1929, the years of the two Universal expositions that city made for expanding and promoting. The biography of Onofre is fictional, but surely based in the life of a real personage. The history of Barcelona is practically real and historical.
Well, when Onofre arrives to Barcelona for the first time, he's 16 years old, a poor man almost illiterate from a rural village. He emigrates to that city -"La ciudad de los prodigios" and in fact, he has to produce many of these prodigies toward his great energy, natural intelligence and lack of moral scruples in a country by these time, fallen in a big decadence mainly by means of real state building and speculation, fraudulent most of all, as Barcelona, imprisoned still in 1888 by his medieval walls, was until then impossible to enlarge. So, Onofre becomes at 24 years old, one of the wealthy and richest man of Spain and the world. He attains his objective joining the anarchist gangs and intervening in the big works the two expositions needed. His methods are no much different of the gangs of Chicago during the roaring twenties: beatings, street figths, shootings, blackmail. The author ever uses humour in a landscape of a country when truly, an ordinary man hadn't another mean to ascend in society that crime. Spanish- American war of 1898 for Cuba and Philippines is seen as a sort of transaction between the USA and Spain, as Spain Offers to admiral Dewey, chief of the USA naval forces, the sum of 150000 pesetas from these times (today it would be over 600 sterling pounds) in order to avoid the war. Dewey, knowing the superiority of USA warships rejects the offer.

The literature about Barcelona depends very, very much on who the writer is, Eduardo Mendoza is defenitely the one for most brilliants! With "la Ciudad de los Prodigios"(in English "City of Marvels"), he gives us an amazing, satirical description of Barcelona. Taking the late 19th Century in Barcelona, between the two world expositions from 1888 and 1929, he imaged a Catalan farm boy going into the city and rising to fame and fortune through completely illegal means. Wandering through the city you can still imagine how it must have been in those times!

I am not a native Spanish speaker and don't consider my level of Spanish to be particularly good, but I still managed to read this book, understand most of it, and appreciate the fantastic storytelling.

This is up there with Sin Noticias de Gurb, very funny, surrealist writing; also not difficult for students of Spanish.
