A lovely and faithful to the original reprint of a book originally published by British Rail in 1948. You will need an up-to-date OS Map to follow these walks and they are slightly different from the descriptions given, but then some 70 years have passed since then and Dr Beeching has long since swung his axe. Mr Mais wrote an evocative introduction which is as powerful now as it was when originally printed.
I throughly recommend this book for anyone in the south-east, but especially for any Londoners who need to escape the city for a day every now and then and recover their sense of reality. To quote the book "Few things have added so much to the sum of human happiness as walking".
