I am a fan of the Good food series of cookbooks and this book was no exeption. I am a student starting in september, and have been searching the market for a good cookbook, small but with a variety of cheap recipes, and most importantly, one which doesnt assume that as a student I have never been inside a kitchen before, and this book ticks all the boxes.

With sections on Brainy Breakfasts and Healthy Snacks, Express meals, Dinners for One, One pan wonders, Food for friends, and Easy puds (yum!), there are recipes for every occasion. Every recipe is simple to make, they are split up into two or three stages, and so even the most basic beginner can follow them, and opposite the recipe is a clear picture of the finished food, so you know what your making and what your aiming for!

Definately the best cookbook for students I found so far, I would recommend it to everyone, not just students!

There is (or there should be) more to life and a student's diet than hamburgers, pizzas and other takeaway food. Yet for many students, a combination of time constraints, budget restrictions and inexperience in the kitchen can get in the way of healthier and often cheaper eating (and living).
This book, as part of the acclaimed BBC GoodFood series, provides 101 different recipes that have been tailor-made for the student on a tight budget and, as usual, triple checked and tested to be sure that they hit the mark.
Split into six distinct sections - brainy breakfasts & healthy snacks, express meals, dinners for one, one-pan wonders, food for friends and easy puds - and backed up by an excellent index, it is easy to skip through the book and look for culinary inspiration.
Once you has found something of interest, perhaps aided by the excellent full-colour photographs of the finished dishes, each recipe is clearly presented with a handy shopping list, concise and well-written instructions and, of course, for the weight-conscious, nutritional information. You have to add the ingredients, do a little work and, of course, the washing up!
However this book should not be restricted to students and people living alone. Many of the dishes are of a quality that could grace a typical family table and, of course, it is easy to scale up recipes to accommodate larger groups. It is a sad fact that many people may otherwise overlook this excellent little book by the title, but on the other hands students might not necessarily search for inspiration from a much larger general recipe book. Catch 22!
Food influences from many cultures feature as well, so the food world is really your oyster and maybe it will help you spread your culinary horizons at the same time.

The book is laid out very well, clear instructions and good pictures. However most of the recipes are simply too complicated and have no place in a "Student" cook book. All I'm looking for are straight forward classic meals, that fill you up and can be fridged for a couple of days. Instead this book presents recipes such as Salmon rarebit, Spaghetti with walnuts, raisins and parsley, Peppered-mackerel fish cakes, Sweetcorn and smoked haddock chowder and Sardines and watercress on toast. These all sound very nice but are too much hassle on a tight budget and nine people sharing one oven / hob.

I got this for my dad to learn to cook as my mum is no longer able to, and most of the meals are not easy basic cooking. This may be suitable for a lot of people, but if you want basic simple cooking I personnally wouldn't recommend this.

I agree with the last reviewer - this is a good book for people who are already into good food and want to cook decent meals for themselves.

Sure, these recipes take into account limited cooking equipment and lack of time, and it would be wonderful if our children had the money, facilities and wherewithal to cook these meals using fresh herbs, fresh chillies, basil leaves, fresh salmon, fresh mussels, packets of rocket etc, packets of mixed seafood, fresh limes...all these ingredients are in this book.

There are 7 chapters in total:

Brainy breakfast & healthy snacks- lots of nice ideas, my daughter said she will make tangy couscous salad, as it will keep a few days in the fridge. She wouldn't make her own muesli bars, but would make flapjacks, nor would she make her own home-made cereals.

Express meals

Now here are some very good ideas, there is an excellent recipe for bolognese bake which has all the flavour of lasagne but is quicker and easier. We cooked this together last night, it is different as it hasn't got the classic white sauce, but it is really tasty. There is also english carbonara, but it uses fresh parmesan, when in reality students would buy it in a packet.

Dinners for one - why not treat yourself to a steak supper? Lovely, but steak for students? However, there is an excellent recipe for sausage and root veg stovie as the meat and veg are cooked in one pan.

one pan wonders - great recipes here, including 1 pan roast dinner. This recipe is realistic as it includes dried herbs.

Food for friends - nice recipes for curry, bolognese, cottage pie, sticky wings, lentil ragu,

Easy puds

Lots of tasty recipes including apple crumble, fried bananas.

Overall, it is a good book - just pick out the recipes that suit cooking in student accommodation and ignore the ones that don't.
