Redan Ridge which lies between Serre and Beaumont Hamel has been largely neglected by historians. Now, this book does attempt to put this right. The area was fought over on 1st July 1916 by 4th Division resulting in heavy loss for no gains. Moreover, it was also the area where the final battles of the Somme took place during November 1916. All battalions who fought in the region are mentioned in the book, some suffered dreadful losses , notably the 1st Hampshires. Michael Renshaw is no academic, but does try to convey the actions in a simple way which is easy to understand and follow. There are some good maps, and some interesting photographs as well. However, there is a question mark about the quality of some of the photographs etc. Still, dont let that put you off though. There is more than enough information to keep any armchair military historian engrossed. A worthwhile addition to the Pen and Sword series on the Somme.

I met Michael Renshaw by chance and he kindly gave me copies of his three books - not my kind of reading at all, but what a surprise !! His books are beautifully written and impartial. The subject is brilliantly studied and describes the awful tragedy of WWI on the Somme without being maudlin. He has inspired me to read more on the subject. Definitely recommended to even those who think this is not their kind of thing. Michael's three books are currently being passed around my work colleagues who are all of the same opinion.

One week of pure hell in November 4 May 2008
By David W. Lang - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Redan Ridge by Michael Renshaw is the ninth volume of the ambitious Battleground Europe series devoted to the Battle of the Somme. Renshaw's book is a superb work, offering clear summaries of the military actions which took place during one week of pure hell in November 1916.

Renshaw uses contemporary maps to explain the British objectives day by day. His choice of photographs shows these objectives to be almost obscene intellectual exercises. Renshaw quotes from personal recollections of the participants to evoke the feel of the battle from the soldiers' point of view.

The Battleground Europe series is intended to serve as self-guided tours of the battlefields, and Renshaw includes a lengthy guide to the Somme area near Redan Ridge. The book provides suggested walks, contemporary and modern photographs to orient the reader, and several practical tips to help make touring the battlefield an informative--and sobering--experience.

I have visited Redan Ridge several times and I have always used this book as a guide. I have completed all of the walks Mr. Renshaw suggests should be taken. The info from his book is correct and easy to follow.
Anyone contemplating a visit to the area should take a copy of this book.
