I bought this book with the intention of it being a gift for my grandchildren. On receiving it, however, I realised just how ignorant and blind I had become regarding the wonderful natural world in the vicinity of our home. Instead of moaning about the weather and the seasonal changes with global warming ad nauseum, Celia Lewis has shown how fortunate we are to have four seasons and twelve months each year. This gorgeous book has all the hallmarks of quality, is elegantly illustrated and educational to a high standard, keeping the flowers, birds and other wildlife that we realistically may come across at a sensible level. The recipes are a bonus. In view of this and the thoughts of grandchildren making sloe gin, I have decided to keep it. They will, of course have access to it (the book, that is), hopefully together. We are fortunate to live near the sea on the edge of Swansea's Gower Peninsula, outstandingly beautiful, so the maritime content is on our door step. A magnificent book. I can see further copies being required, deservedly so.

I intend to keep my copy by my bed but this is a great bedside or coffee table book just to dip into and get a breath of fresh country air every now and then.

Gorgeous illustrations in a month by month guide to the seasons, with wildlife to watch out for, plants, flowers even a page on animal tracks you may come across. It includes a seasonal recipe or something to make, using things you may find while out on a walk. A really nice present for anyone who likes nature!
