This book does 4 things. It gives you a great selection of modern poetry. It introduces you to the poets with short, well written biogs. It lets you hear them through the enclosed CD. And it gives you the satisfaction of handling a beautifully published book with satisfying modern typography. An all-round great experience for sitting peacefully and reading then listening. A reminder of what the digital age may leave behind.

This maybe a good choice for some but it didn't hold me spellbound as some poetry can. Where there some missing? Possibly, and I didn't totally enjoy the choice of poems, interesting but there are other anthologies and collections that I've enjoyed more. The write ups on each poet were a good addition.

Schmidt in this 'coffee table style' book selects 50 poets to represent English poetry of the 20th century.Inevitably, each of us would have included a number that he omits,(mine would have included T E Hulme, the father of Imagism, which had such a profound impact upon the development of all later 'open-form' poetry and the innovative Adelaide Crapsey whose American cinquain is illustrative of the shorter poetic forms that influenced the now widespread 'lay poetry writing ',so prevalent in this digital age),Also, for me, perhaps 25 would have been better, thus permitting a longer appraisal of each ,in the manner of Schmidt's earlier, excellent 'Lives of the Poets'.Notwithstanding these subjective observations, the masterstroke with this publication is undoubtedly the inclusion of an audio CD of 17 poets reading some of their work, emphasing the basic key aspect of poetry as 'sounds aloud' and therefore greatly aiding both the student and lay reader alike. All told yet ,another book that places Schmidt alongside both Johnson and Sissons as a contemporary observer of their poetic eras.At Amazon's bargain price, inc the CD,exceedingly amazingly good value.

This book is outstanding and would serve as a great present for anyone interested in poetry. The page layout is clear- there is an introduction to the life of each poet, a photograph and excerpts. It covers a huge range of modern poets and is very enjoyable to read. For all ages and knowledge of poetry- as an introduction or a reminder of our modern poets- really fantastic book.
