Was bought for a present for a 17 year old who aspires to a career in theatre design. She reads it in bed every night and is rarely parted from it.

Brilliant, brilliant & brilliant!!! I'd highly recommend getting the other books to complete the set as it will definately heighten how to make the best of what your trying to achieve, whether it be knowledge or a bigger insight into things.

I'm an assistant director putting on a play in 3.5 months time. This totally put things into perspective. Buy it. Its a must! Why are you still reading? Go do it

Very informative if, like me, you know nothing about the industry. Tells you all the theatrical 'linguo' and has some cool illustrations. Nice sized book too.. and good layout of the information and text inside!

just the tip of the iceberg, but enough to put on a show 25 Jan. 1997

it is a very basic introduction to stage design and set management, but it can get you through the making and managing of a set. With no knowledge of theatre and this book, you can design, biuld paint, and support, a set, and be creative in the process

excellent descriptions 13 Feb. 2012

This concise book is excellent in giving you the basics of stage design, especially in showing you the equipment and properties involved and how they are used on stage. The author is British, so some of the terminology is slightly different than used in the U.S. But, Holt does an excellent job in explaining these concepts.
Personally, I am more interested in screenwriting and directing than in stage design. But, this is a wonderful guide, to help one understand what is involved in a first-class production. The more you know about related areas, the better you can understand how everything should fit together and appreciate everyone's creative contributions.
