In the past I have bought several books on calligraphy - all much the same and full of stuff you don't want. At last a book that covers everything you do want in an easy to read format. David Harris gives instruction for 100 alphabets in one little book and has skimped on nothing. As well as this he has even managed sections on materials, layouts and illumination. It will certainly be my 'Bible' from now on.

A very well laid - out and written book, with a serious choice of alphabets for anyone. The letters explained cover most periods of history, and instructions on tools and materials, preparing to write and tips on illumination etc., make this a must have companion.

My dear friends, this ''piece of art'' represents the excellence of calligraphy.
Having 100 alphabets and detailed instructions for drawing them, this book is by far
one of the best! It also includes a ''meeting with your tools!'' in which the writer: David Harris gives
instructions for newcalligraphers(!), in how to use your tools!
The Book concludes the Basic alphabets:
I) ROMAN
II) POST ROMAN
III) INSULAR
IV) GOTHIC
V) RENAISSANCE
VI) BAROQUE
VII) MODERN
+ Hands selector, Decorating with Gold, Glossary, Layout Basics and many more!!!

The book has approximately 256 pages!

If you are a fan of Calligraphy just buy it!!!

Thank you for reading this! Remember if my review was helpful, please rate it as a helpful one! I will also
be happy to reply to your comments!

Very good book with a wide range of calligraphy styles to work with. If you're new to calligraphy then you might find it difficult to choose which style to try first (there's that many). I would suggest sticking with one initially rather than trying several. That way you can perfect your skills and not become downhearted. It is good that the book is ring bound so you can open the pages out fully without wrecking your book. It is not a big book so don't be disappointed when it arrives (pages are A5 I think). Highly recommended purchase.

I bought this book after reading lots of enthusiastic reviews on this page, including by customers who seem to be new to calligraphy. Actually, it is more a catalogue of scripts (with the strokes' order) than a teach-yourself-book, let alone one that could be easily used by beginners:
**Even if a sign indicates the letters' height in front of most scripts (though not all), the proportions between height and width would have appeared in a much clearer way if the scripts had been written on a squared background or at least between two horizontal lines.

**The scripts in the book were obviously made using a computer. In my opinion, the letters' extreme regularity and their perfection makes them less instructive than hand-made models with tiny irregularities that would let some of the writing process and movement show.

** Examples of words or phrases would have helped visualise how to space and/or link the letters (which can sometimes have impressive flourishes)

Consequently, think other media exist nowadays that would be much more adequate than a very static book to teach calligraphic scripts to those who can't attend a course in person. This kind of book might then be welcome later in the training, as a refresher.
