Once again Geoff Barton has managed to create a well-presented and comprehensive textbook that has carefully considered the needs of the teacher and pupil. The book is NLS compliant with separate sections for the 3 years of Key Stage 3. At the beginning of each chapter a list of objectives is given for both word and sentence level, reading, writing as well as speaking and listening. Texts included range from Harry Potter to Nicholas Nickleby, which the students then analyse by answering questions that test their understanding of the text, interpretation skills and knowledge of language and structure. The extended writing activities that follow allow the students to apply the newly acquired understanding into their own writing. I have used the book with a difficult year 8 class; it was very successful and really got them thinking. A great book to gradually prepare students for the end of key stage SATs

This book is excellent, clear layout and clear developmental stages. This means that you can move a group up a year or back if they have missed the basics. The bullet-pointed 'Text Features' that begin each section are especially useful and comprehesions are divided so that types of question can be easily recognised.

I have also used this with GCSE groups - not for comprehension but to teach structure and style in writing as many of the texts in the book and in the teacher's resource pack are at a level that can be reasonably emulated (in style and length)by students looking to broaden their own writing skills. It's a real shame that the book is now published only in Year Groups.

I like the fact that each year group has a section and you can lift bits out. Excellent for days when planning time is tight or cover.
