5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable 1 May 2013

I teach a fashion textiles and design class and I recently discovered this book. It has become an invaluable teaching tool for my students. It covers every aspect of lingerie design and offers advice and guidance in a very accessible way. The author draws on her own experience and interviews other lingerie designers for their advice and knowledge. It also covers the history of lingerie, patterns, costing, manufacture and marketing. I would highly recommend this book for students or people considering starting their own lingerie label or company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for Starters 18 Feb 2014

It's actually a good book if you want to start your own shop too. There were points which i wish i knew before i started. After 7 years experience in lingerie selling and thousands of one to one bra size recommendations i would say that there is still something i have learned from this book. Unfortunately the book is not complete, there is too little about D+ sizes, it is still a challenge to make comfortable plus size bras.
But still, read this book before you rent that expensive store on the high street or approach your very first customer as a designer or as a retailer. You will be one step ahead of your competition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as I had hoped 30 Jan 2014

This book is okay but nowhere near the five-star book I was expecting. It touches on a bit of everything but, in doing so, does little more than skim the surface of topics. I read it cover-to-cover in two very short evenings. It's not a large book by any standards - the relatively large font size and large margins means that although it weighs in at 160 pages, it doesn't feel like 160 pages' worth of information.

I'll admit I did like the Q&As at the back with the lingerie designers. It's always useful to hear how people have made their way into an industry and the web addresses etc. were also useful but the rest of the information felt very basic and I feel you'd be better off buying a book on how to set up a small business rather than using this.

Overall, the book lacks a professional feel. I only realised on receiving it that it must be self-published and there are a woeful number of formatting/spelling/grammar/punctuation/English mistakes. Some made me laugh out loud ("co-insided", "now a-days", "get minimize" !!!) other sections were just unintelligible or inaccurate (the mark-ups on p. 107 for instance). It is inexcusable to publish and sell a book without even doing a spellcheck. Surely she has a friend who could have given it a read.

This book has good intentions, I just expected more. Given the choice I probably wouldn't buy it again.

I like this book very much, because there is very much information in it of how to become a lingerie designer.
She tells from her own experience and I think the book is very complete in its information.
From the history of lingerie, moodboards, costings, manufactoring, photoshoots, meeting with buyers, until interviews with lingerie designers, its all in the book. I was very happy with it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Useful 16 Mar 2014

I'm currently researching starting my own lingerie business and unfortunately this book was disappointing. The thoughts were unorganized, there wasn't any explanation to the basic points she introduced. Half the book was her version of making a bra and brief pattern, and the other was lists of other sources you can go to for more information. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone wanting serious information for starting their own business as that information is quickly skimmed over in one or two paragraphs. The interviews in the end are what I found the most useful, although the questions asked were also a bit unorganized.

It is an interesting read from someone within the industry. I haven't finished it yet but it has helpful information about an industry I know very little about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Stress the importance of technical designing! 28 Feb 2014
By Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
This is an excellent, and pithy book. My favorite thing about it was the details and she is an experienced designer/business owner. This book is great as a overview of the lingerie business in general. Covers many different topics but in a shallow depth. She stresses the importance of technical design in lingerie which is the main difference in this book from others. She does not just conceptualize about the design process like normal design books do.
