It is quite hard, some days I struggle. Hold the handle in your left hand, grip the water tank firmly and pull it straight up.... That's how I do it. Sounds simple but not always. ( I have cheated and used a gardening glove that had grips before) Hope it works for you

If its brand new the vents cannot be blocked ? Is the water tank pressed home firmly. If not the valve will not feed the water in to the heating element.
