Product Description

Product Description

The author, who is himself a Romani, speaks directly to the gadze (non-Gypsy) reader about his people, their history since leaving India one thousand years ago and their rejection and exclusion from society in the countries where they settled, their health, food, culture and society. He offers candid frank advice on rejecting prejudices and stereotypes and getting to know Roma as individuals. He describes the development of Roma identity and politics, gives short biographies of prominent Roma in many different walks of life, describes the Romani language and illustrates it with proverbs providing an insight into Roma thought and belief. It is extensively illustrated and provides a rare inside view into the life and society of the Roma people. This book is published in association with OSI, New York, a charitable foundation whose aims include supporting equality of opportunity for the Roma of Central and Eastern Europe.

About the Author

Ian Hancock received his PhD from London University and teaches Romani Studies at the University of Texas, Austin, where he is the Director of the Romani Archives and Documentation Center. He was born in Britain and descends on his father's side from Hungarian Romungre Romanies and on his mother's side from English Romanichal Gypsies. In 1998 President Clinton appointed him to represent Romanies on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. He is the author of over 300 articles and books, mostly on the Romanies.

Ian Hancock is a giant in many fields. He is easily the most prominent Romani academic, intellectual and activist in the world (even advising former US President Clinton on Romani culture) he has done so much for his people, and all people as a whole, by standing up for Romani rights, culture and liberty.

In this book, Hancock presents an easy to read guide to Romani people, their identity, their language and customs. He aims the book at the gadzo (non-Romani) who wishes to learn. When I decided to learn about my own heritage, being a person of Romanichal descent, this is the first book I read. It is loaded with facts, dates and Hancock's own research and contributions (which he consistently downplays) and explores some reasons behind antigypsyism, he is unafraid to make criticisms of both Romani and Gadze culture and suggest ways in which Gadze can interact properly with Romanies and prevent misunderstandings. I would advise anybody interested to read this book.

It is simply written, insightful and very accessible. The punchy mixture of cartoons, photographs and easy to digest information make this book and its message startlingly easy to absorb. An excellent read, thorough and clear without being at all dense or confusing. Excellent!

A Worthwhile Book 10 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Being an accomplished Jack-of-all-Trades is no easy thing. It requires great skill, understanding and effort. In producing this book, Ian Hancock has proven his capacity in each of these areas. He has managed to create a book that concentrates a vast amount of information and presents it in a way that is not only palatable, but of use to anybody reading it.

The gadje (non-Romanies) will find a clearly presented, blunt account of who, what, why and how the Romani are. No stereotypes and only the absolutely necessary pretensions to grandeur.

Professionals, gadje or not, will be pleased to discover a fastidiously researched text complete with a comprehensive reference list. Problems facing the Romani - and gadje who work with the Romani - are pin-pointed and summarised with a fastidious elegance. If further information is required then it is a simple matter to explode the summary by using Hancock's bibliography as a guide. Whether the reader works in health care, social care, or some other area, this book WILL BE useful.

For Romani readers, Hancock provides information about our past that may have been lost and a carefully researched list of resources available for the use of Roma. His review also offers an opportunity to recognise what makes us a single people despite our vast differences. In his book, Hancock says, "it is tempting to see resistance to intra-group co-operation as an ingrained characteristic of our people". I feel I must agree, but much as that resistance makes us strong as individuals and families, it can also make us weak as a people.

Opre Roma.

Format:Paperback
I purchased this as a reference for a novel and it is excellent. Well written chapters give sufficient detail to be useful and cover a range of topics from the largely neglected history of the Romani people to customs and dress. The book itself is nicely produced with clear type and good quality paper and binding. A very good introduction to the subject.
