I bought this book after attending a course with one of the authors. The book links Accelerated Learning theory to practical activities for the classroom. Four children are used to illustrate the points made about different styles of learning, and amusing illustrations of the children help to direct you around the text and remind you of important points. Acronyms are used to help with recall - such as RAP for Recognition, Affirmation and Praise. The metaphor of a learning journey (hence the name ALPS) is used to good effect, with target setting being the signposting for the journey, the children carrying rucksacks of self esteem, and so on. This book is an essential read for all teachers interested in brain based learning - and the authors make the point that there is no learning that is not brain based! The book gives numerous practical ideas, and I recommend following it up by reading the 'ALPS Resource Book' by the same authors.

Inspiring 2 July 2002

Have read this book and found it totally inspiring. There are many ideas to put into practice in the classroom to make every minute of the day a fun and enjoyable learning experience.
I have put some of these ideas and exercises into practice with my five and six year olds and they ask to do them again and again, not realising that they are enhancing their learning every time! I am teaching seven and eight year olds soon, and will definately be using many of these ideas.

This book is full of practical ideas along with the theory of why accelerated learning works. I immediately started trying out the ideas in my classroom, and already, after a week, I can see the difference in the children's work. Suddenly, children who used to say "I can't do it" are attempting to write a substantial amount. On Fridays, those who achieve their targets come to the front of the class to jump in a hoop and shout "BULLSEYE!" while we all clap them. They love it!

This book helps to make sense of the demands on you as a teacher, such as target setting. It puts the teacher's job into the context of how the brain works and how best to teach. Every primary teacher should read it.
