Product Description

This is a remarkable true story. In the 1970s, Mike Feistel took to the rails and traveled across America. During his travels, he crossed paths with a fifteen year old homeless boy, Curtis, who had been thrown out of his mother's home by her abusive, alcoholic boyfriend. When Mike and Curtis cross paths at the rescue mission in Yakima, Washington, Curtis pleads with Mike to help him get back to his father's house in Dallas, Texas.

But Mike didn't want to take on the responsibility of traveling across the nation by freight train with a fifteen year old kid. He had his own life to live, and his own plans. However, after hearing a convicting sermon delivered by the 'preacher man' at the mandatory church service that evening, Mike had a change of heart - and decided to take the kid under his wing. The next morning they departed from the Yakima switchyard on a freight train, headed across America toward Dallas, Texas.

Thus began Curtis's amazing homeward journey, under the guidance and care of Mike. It would be a journey neither of them would ever forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read 14 July 2013
By Brendan

A very entertaining read. Gives a good insight into a part of American life that is not very visible. The shared appreciation of a good meal or an amazing sunset and how the community of rail riders help each other makes a wonderful story. I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL STORY! 25 May 2012
By TEATHYME - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I just finished reading this amazing story. I really love to read books self published by the author. This is a true story that takes place in the early 70's. A real life adventure involving the author and the the young boy Curtis who finds himself kicked out of his home by his Mother's boyfriend with just the clothes on his back. Not having any money he decides he will ride the rails to get to his Father's in Texas. You will have to read the story to see the amazing events that happen. I felt sad when I finished reading "America From the Other Side of the Tracks." I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with Mike and Curtis as they made the difficult journey through America together. About the time I thought I would put the book down something else happened and I had to read on. This kept happening over and over. You will not want to miss sharing in this true life adventure. I highly recommend it to young adults and the old in years but young at heart.

This story is filled with courage, conviction, and compassion. A young man takes a a boy under his wings to help him get back to his father while experiencing many difficult and sometimes life threatening experiences.

It was uplifting to read this true life story about the human spirit. We live in a troubled and anxious world and it is inspiring to read this kind of story. It gives one hope for a better tomorrow.

I give this a 5 star rating. It would make a great movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!! 2 Oct. 2012

When you start reading this book it is very hard to put down. This book gives you a whole different look on life. It is a real life account of compassion, giving and respect. The descriptions of the people and places aren't real detailed, but you have no trouble "seeing" it all and putting yourself right there with them. I admire Mike for writing about his life experiences. In meeting him, I saw immediately what a kind and humble person he truly is. I hope he will write another book and share more of his life adventures with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 1 Oct. 2012

I have to say this is an amazing book! The courage this man has to even share a part of his life is amazing to me...especially in a time when hobo's were looked upon as lesser people...He went with how he felt and just lived his life and a dream he had had for a long time...I actually have met him and he's such a very respectable warm person!! It is a must read! I read the book in 6 hours...I couldn't put it down!!

4.0 out of 5 stars America from the Other side of the Tracks 17 Sept. 2012

Feistel has written an extremely engaging and fun to read adventure about life on "the rails." When I began the book I didn't know what to expect but was drawn into the life he so imaginatively creates and describes. There is adventure, excitement, drama, and some great moral lessons that would make the world a better place if people lived them. A great, fun read. And when you are finished you yearn for the opportunity to experience some of your own "Clickey-clack"!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing journey 14 April 2013
By Nicole N - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the best book I have read in a long time. I read it in one day because I could not put it down. The book leaves you wanting to go experience this adventure for yourself and leaves you wanting to read more and not wanting the book to end. I cannot wait for another book to come out. It's a whole different life and adventure that I have never been in before and loved feeling like I was actually right in the middle of it. Michael has a way of captivating his audience and keeping them on the edge of their seat. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone!!!!! Two big thumbs up!!!!!
