It does exactly what it says on the tin opener. It's a nice, robust, aesthetically pleasing piece of kit. The only drawbacks are that on completion of the tin opening cycle a small sliver of tin lid keeps it attached to the rest of the tin making the magnetic capture feature rather ineffective and making it a bit messy (and potentially dangerous)to remove the lid by hand.

UPDATE.
It is now 2013 and we're still using this opener. It is robust and has lasted very well and works very well. The drawback issue I mentioned in the first review is easily overcome by turning the the opener a fraction of a turn in the opposite direction to begin with and then opening the tin as normal. using this technique it works fine and the lid is easily removed with the inbuilt magnet.

As with all Zyliss products, this is a thoughtfully designed device that works perfectly and should last forever. It is quite large, and the broad handles mean you can comfortably open the toughest tins without bruising the palms of your hands. It has a clever device for locking the handles together once you have made the first cut into the tin - this means you don't need to keep squeezing the handles together while you finish opening the tin. It's great for everyday family use, but I imagine it would also be excellent for older people or those who find traditional tin-openers something of a struggle. Looks nice, works well, should last many years - highly recommended.

Zyliss Tin Opener with Lock
Good safe can opener, brought one from Canada 2 years ago and thought this would be good for parents as there are no bits that you have to grip hard, like you do on say a butterfly type can opener.

We've all had the frustration of using a rubbish tin opener haven't we? And we've all had that begrudging feeling of paying £2 for a new one, just in case it's as rubbish as the one you currently own.

Despite the higher price tag on this tin opener it REALLY does justify it. It works perfectly every time.

It takes off the lid, leaving a smooth edge on the main body of the tin - I prefer this to the side opening ones where you get a sharp edge on the main body of the tin.

To use, you just attach it to the top of the tin, squeeze the (nicely rubber coated) handles to lock, rotate and open! It even has a magnet on the head of it, to grab the lid of the tin as it comes loose…and a trigger release to deactivate the magnet should you wish to deposit the tin lid without having to touch it (handy with oily products like tuna in oil).

This tin opener would be perfect for anyone who struggles with the constant squeezing required to use a normal tin opener, as you have to hold it tight all the way round, but this just requires one quick squeeze and it's locked.

Also, the turning handle is nice and substantial, not like some of the smaller cheap metal tin openers which can cause serious injury when they fly off the tin with all the force you're using trying to get it to work.

What distinguishes this can opener from others is not only the lock, which operates with a soft click to open and lock the handles, but also the lack of effort it requires to open a can. The handlebars have a soft grip, making this ideal for people with small hands or people with arthritis in their hands. I've been looking for an electric can opener for a long time, but reluctant to get one because of the lack of space on my work top, luckily I've found the perfect solution with this tool.

First a little history ...

In 1810 an inventor, Peter Durand, received a patent from King George III for the world’s first can made of iron and tin.  In 1858, almost a half century after the can was invented, Ezra Warner patented the first dedicated can opener. This design became known as a “bayonet and sickle” type can opener. It worked by puncturing the can with the bayonet portion, and then the sickle portion would remove the lid.

And some more ...

Zyliss is a Swiss manufacturer of kitchen products. Zyliss was founded by trained bicycle mechanic, Karl Zysset (1907-1998) in 1951. The company launched its first product, the onion chopper, with the slogan "Zig-Zig Zyliss. Three notable inventions have been developed by Zyliss including the Garlic Press, the Salad Spinner, and the Onion Chopper.

And finally the review ...

My old and trusted tin opener had finally given up working and was unceremoniously chucked into the bin after a couple of weeks of cutting myself on jagged edges that really shouldn't be there. I was therefore very pleased to be offered this Zyliss Tin Opener with lock to test and review.

This Zyliss Can opener has a good solid feel to it and as can openers go it is an attractive item, white with dark grey rubber non slip handles that are very comfortable to hold. The can opener is equally easy to use, I found that the 'Lock n Lift' mechanism works well and never fails to open and remove the can's lid leaving a clean and non jagged edge.

The magnet is operated by the red magnet lever on the reverse of the opener. The Zyliss Lock n Lift Can Opener locks onto the can to cut and the magnet lifts and releases the lid for safe and easy disposal.
