I am very disappointed with this item. The blade is sharp but the holder for food is badly designed. Its gripping spikes are too short, so the pressure needed to cut and slice makes the spikes rip out instead. The julienne slicer does not work, you cannot draw food back again for a quick motion, and if you try to lift the food with the holder to draw back it falls off the badly designed holder.
Maybe there is a version of this implement that works, but don't waste your money on this product. I wish I had believed the other bad reviews.
I am editing to add a note to this review. I have found one use for this slicer - it makes wafer thin slices of raw potato, which placed on a silicon sheet in the microwave for four or five minutes make delicious and totally fat free crisps. The slicer will be staying for that reason. other than that the critique stands as above.

I really like this little gadget. It is smaller & easier to use than my old mandolin, & I don't have to fiddle about changing the blades as with my previous model. Also, this juliennes, fabulous for salads/garnishes/cole slaw. Yes, the blades are sharp, but then, they need to be for it to work effectively. As long as you use the guard & follow the instructions, all is safe. It slices perfectly, & what I appreciate greatly is the way you can adjust the thickness: three settings. I have now made several batches of veggie crisps, particularly loving the parsnip crisps, & it has produced great potato slices to top a hot-pot. I find that it does, as it is claimed, slice soft fruits/veg very well, giving me, for example, uniform tomato slices for my tomato salad, & making slices of onions for my curries etc in double-quick time. Yes, I own an excellent cook's knife & I enjoy using that, but this is so quick & easy & a joy to use that I reach for this as often as I do my knife. Okay, it is a little difficult to store in the drawer due to the curve of the handle, & there is the possibility of losing the parts, but I have propped it up against the tiles under the knife rack, the loose parts next to it. I will continue to use this Zyliss hand held slicer on a regular basis & can highly recommend it.

Firstly, let me state that I'm more than competent in a kitchen and am very used to handling sharp implements and kitchen gadgetry. On paper, this looks like a great idea, but in practice, it's hopeless. To start with, the gripper bit doesn't really grip. I use a lot of carrots & thought it would be good to create more uniform slices for even cooking. The carrots wouldn't stay put & slid off & I ended up slicing off the top of my thumb (there was a lot of bold, fortunately, not in the dinner!). I then thought I'd try the julienne bit. Again, the gripper bit wouldn't stay put & another problem is that it's impossible the draw whatever you're chopping up as it has to go back over the blades.
Overall, don't bother.

This is far better than my previous mandolin. I'd never been able to get consistently thick slices, as the leading edge had always been thicker than the trailing edge. With this model the back edge of the `pusher' is shaped so that you can easily maintain pressure on the trailing edge and get nice even slices.

It's main job is slicing for microwave crisps, and I've produced many successful batches (a fantastic fat-free snack for people fighting the sat fat war).

This mandolin also has a Julienne feature, which I now use several times per week. It only takes a couple of minutes and the resulting carrot sticks microwave in 3 or 4 minutes. I've discovered these are popular with people who aren't otherwise very keen on veg. However the Julienne blades are unforgiving and you do need to make sure you keep your fingers away from them (been there, seen it, done it, wearing the plaster).

It goes through the dish-washer happily on the top shelf, but unsurprisingly the clear plastic deck is starting to become discoloured.

The slicer itself is great, nice and easy to use, nice even slices and being hand held you can hold it at the most comfortable angle to use. It's also dishwasher safe, so cleaning is nice and easy, quick rinse in cold water to get all the food off and then into the dishwasher.

The hand shield is another matter entirely.

It has shaped edges that suggest it should clip to the slicer in some way (which it doesn't) and the spikes to hold the food are so short they're of no use at all. Every food I tried came loose, causing the food to cut incorrectly, the guard to drop taking my hand dangerously close to the blade and usually leads to the blades cutting pieces out of the hand guard, which won't do the blades any good. I have come very close to cutting chunks out of both fingers and the hand itself. It's worrying that I'm finding it actually less dangerous to not use the guard/holder whilst slicing the food, but that's not an option if the julienne blades are in place.

The Julienne blades don't seem to work quite so easily as the plain slicer, but they work well enough once you get the method right.

In all, whilst the slicer works well, because of the hand guard, this slicer is extremely dangerous and I wouldn't like to recommend it to anyone. I'm actually in the process of reporting it to Amazon as a health risk.
