Zyliss make some excellent products. I have one of their peelers, and a can opener too. So, I anticipated the arrival of the herb chopper, confident in the knowledge that it would be well-made, innovative, and extremely useful. On this occasion, I was wrong. For centuries, herb chopping has been made easy by the conventional, twin-handled herb chopper, with a large central blade, and a rocking action provided by the bowed shape of the cutter. The reason that they are still around, is that they work.

This Zyliss chopper is an over-engineered solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The cutting blades are unusually sharp, something just not necessary for herbs, and this makes it potentially dangerous too, hence the plastic guard over the blades. This slips off very easily by the way, so be warned. The much-vaunted adjustable handle also seems pointless, especially as I was completely unable to turn the thing, despite a good instruction leaflet telling me how. Any attempt at doing anything to the chopper immediately dislodges the cover on the blades, exposing you to the razor sharp row of metal rollers.

I was also unable to open the top, again supposedly for cleaning, and easy to operate, according to the leaflet.
Maybe it is just me. perhaps I am a herb chopper buffoon? Either way, I doubt that I will be using this again. Sorry Zyliss, better luck next time. The two stars are given, as it does actually cut herbs, but then so does a knife.

It comes with instructions but you can figure it out. It chops herbs - end of.
I think this gadget is very dangerous - please never leave it in the hands of a child or a forty something engineer for that matter. You would have half you fingers sliced off in about 3 seconds!
It does what a knife does so why have something that looks like it has come out of a kitchen that doesn't do any run of the mill family cooking.
It's not even a trendy or goofy present that you might for a 'new home' or as a wedding present stocking filler.
As someone who cooks daily from basic fresh foods I will find no use for whatsoever.. And I thought I might.
And whoa it isn't cheap!

I had a feeling that this product would actually have a benefit I couldn't yet see, however it happens to be the most pointless kitchen gadget that actually takes more time to use than the simple knife.

Where to start with the problems. The unit is dangerous. Trying to get the unit out the blister packaging, and suddenly it falls out, with no safety from the blade safety protector which became detached within the packaging. Secondly, the bladees are super sharp and you actually feel nervous using this with anyone else around. The chopping is okay, you simply roll the blades back and forth like a pizza slicer. However once finished? You need to take the unit apart to get all the bits of herb that went inside the unit (which is a fair bit). It's also tricky to take apart.. Even more so when you have 5 blades just centimetres away from your fingers. The stiffness when trying to separate too does not help in this respect.

So in all, it takes more time then it should to use and clean than a knife, without adding much value to the task itself. Whilst the grip is nice, and the unit looks good, it's a case of style over substance and I would avoid.

I grow a lot of herbs, and this time of the year I starting cutting them down, dicing them and freezing them. Fine chopping with a knife gets laborious, chopping with an electric blade pulverises them, so I thought this gadget might be a good third option. It's not.

This is basically a thick plastic handle with 5 circular knife blades attached. You roll the unit over the herbs and they get chopped by the circular blades. You can re-roll over them to get a finer and finer cut. The idea works fairly well, but the unit itself is lethal.

The herbs get stuck to the blades so need to be wiped off, but you'd be a fool to squish your finger between those blades without a chainmail glove on. Same with washing the blades - they're impossible to hand wash safely. The unit can go through a dishwasher, just don't fish around in there without thinking. Even the blasted plastic packaging it arrived in was horrendous to open!

I've given the cutter two stars, as it does work reasonably well enough, but we've decided to (very carefully) bin it. It's just too dangerous to have around our kitchen.

I am a bit of a gadget girl in the kitchen but this is a gadget too far for me. It does the job but I prefer my mezzaluna and shaped cutting board, in fact I'd be happier using a knife.

The blades are really sharp which in one sense is a good thing. However I didn't like the so-called safety cover at all - it is really flimsy and I was actually more worried about the cover slipping and getting my fingers sliced as I was putting it on. It didn't seem much of a safety feature to me. At least you know where you are with a knife! The handle has two positions but the mechanism was very stiff and the safety cover kept coming off as I turned the handle - just another opportunity to slice your fingers. A knife is also a great deal easier to clean (the herbs tend to accumulate on the blades and behind) and with far less risk to the fingers.

I think this is destined to lie in the back of the drawer.
