Product Description

Product Description

Latest wireless N technology enhances performance and coverage The ZyXEL WAP3205 brings you a faster wireless connection than the existing 11g networks. With a data transfer rate of up to 300 Mbps*, which is 6 times faster than 11g, you can enjoy high-speed network connection and high-definition video streaming no matter where you are at home, and better yet, it also works with your existing 802.11b and 802.11g network. Easy to expand your network wirelessly Some wired devices such as modems, set-top boxes, digital media adapters and storage devices might not be natively wireless capable. In order to connect these without additional wiring, driver installation or configuration, just plug the Ethernet cable into the WAP3205 and connect to another wired device to get connected wirelessly. Extend wireless network coverage with most popular APs With the built-in Universal Repeater mode, the WAP3205 can work as a wireless client to connect most popular access points, and simultaneously performs as an access point to provide wireless connectivity to all other wireless devices such as notebooks. In other words, the WAP3205 can extend the wireless coverage to the entire home premise and enable all wireless devices to link to the existing network - this is especially helpful for larger home environments. One-touch WPS button for easy wireless security setup Equipped with a Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) push button, the WAP3205 makes establishing a secure wireless network easy. The WPS takes only a few seconds to set up a secure wireless network without any complicated procedures. Instead of entering a pass phrase, users can authenticate a new device on the network by pressing a single button or by entering an automatically generated PIN code. With the button option, users could even setup the wireless configuration and encryption with just a simple click.

Normally I'm not one to write product reviews, be they good or bad. However, I had to break that habit for the WAP 3205. Allow me to summarise.

Pro:

- Compact
- Looks nice enough
- Comes with ethernet cable

Con:

- Couldn't connect to router via wireless; had to use ethernet cable. Tried manually (found it needed a PIN my router didn't have) and WPS (failed to detect the router).
- Interface clunky and difficult to use
- Manual essentially unintelligible owing to poor diagram labels and absence of information, along with conflicting information in different sections
- When booster left 1 floor below machine from which I type, booster signal (Channel 8) was 10-20% weaker than original router signal (Channel 13). This is in a suburban terrace, not Kensington Palace.

In short, I found the WAP 3205 to be difficult to understand (and I've been setting up wireless networks for about 8 years), unsuitable for its intended purpose in any case, and all in all supremely frustrating to attempt to use. It's now on its way back to Amazon.

Two stars awarded because I have no doubt many other people have found it to work very well. Can't recommend but, then again, can't really condemn either, since I have no clue what the problem was.

ZyXEL's WAP3205 v2, This router itself is superb, it just needs a bit of downtime to be setup correctly.
Routers claim these days to be plug and play sort of thing, but dont forget its WIRELES, how many of your neighbours have wifi also? If like me i'm surrounded by other peoples wifi signals interfering etc. Most devices these days have wifi connectivity so having a strong and stable wifi signal to share your fiber internet to all your devices is essential. This router can do just that!

I also purchased X2 : http://www.amazon.com/802-11b-Wireless-Booster-Amplifier-Antenna/dp/B00E8C1S8E

2w 802.11b/g Wifi Wireless LAN Signal Booster Amplifier W Antenna 2.4g, These simply connect to the antenna ports then amplify your wifi signal for better throughput range.

After I had read a little bit more into the wifi boosters I found that the antenna supplied is only cheaply made and is not capable of outputting more than 6dBi. So I was on the hunt again for a better antenna that could easily cover my entire house and be capable of outputting the full amplifiers dBi output. After a short hunt on amazon I found: +9.5dBi Omni TurboTenna 2.4GHz WiFi antenna with RP-SMA for Netgear, Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link Routers & Adapters
This antenna is capable of outputting 9.5+ dBi and spreads the coverage more evenly across your house to make sure everywhere has wifi signal. These antenna's simply screw on to the wifi boosters output port, if you don't think you need the ample coverage with the boosters then I highly recommend replacing the stock ZyXEL WAP3205 v2's with these antennas as the stock are only cheaply manufactured like I said above.

Arrived on time which is good I guess, but the instructions that came were pretty much useless when it came to actually setting up the system. Returned for full refund

I'm usually pretty good at these things and setup as a wifi repeater seemed to be going ok. I just couldn't access the admin screens! My laptop and other devices were in the same IP address range and it had locked in with a steady signal. Eventually, I discovered that the laptop needed a fixed IP address, even though it was always the same address and fixed at the other router settings, to always up use the same IP address for that MAC device. Once I fixed the IP address on the laptop, I was able to log into the repeater and continue the setup. Yay!

In principle this seems a good access point, it looks nice, seems sturdy enough and seems capable of the basic functionality you need from it.

However, the instructions for this product are terrible. I have a background in IT and have never struggled so much trying to get a product to connect to our existing router. The instructions, to me, seem to be trying to be basic and user-friendly, but they just went too far with this and don't have half as much detail as should be included, so you can get the product connected and functioning.

The packaging for the product was good and you get the plug and ethernet cable included. However, I would struggle to recommend this to anyone as it is a great deal of hassle for a very basic product really. If they improved the instructions then I'd reconsider this, but as it is this product has disappointed me quite a lot.

Unfortunately this wireless access point is overcomplicated to set up. So, despite its good price I cannot recommend it to anyone.

When my old TP Link router started to play-up I though this unit may serve as a replacement for my wireless G device.
This unit is wireless N.. around 300mbps transfer rate. I wanted to use this as an access point in another room as I use powerline adapters to create a wired home network.
I’m quite used to having to manually configure network devices by typing-in 192.168.1.x into the browser. this was no different. I found this very similar in configuration to my old router.
Now then, here’s my biggest problem; this gizmo is advertised as 300mbps transfer rate BUT has a 100mbps ethernet connector. This limits the overall rate to just 100mbps IF you’re using this as an AP as opposed to bridge.

In summary this access point is pretty standard at this price. It functions well but is unremarkable
