Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
(**NOTE: This review is of the ZyXEL NSA325 v2 2-Bay Media Server.**) ZyXEL's version 2 of its NSA325 looks plainer than the first version; gone are the nice wavy lines on the front, in favour of a more subtle honeycomb effect at the bottom. The hardware itself hasn't changed that much, with the exception of the fact that it can accommodate 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch hard drives in its bays. The drives cannot be secured into place without the use of a hand tool, though this doesn't bother me too much.

With a 1.6GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM, the NSA325 v2 is middle-of-the-road in its device class. I found it to be middling when it comes to noise too. It's not the noisiest NAS enclosure I've ever used, nor is it the quietest (your experience may vary according to the drives you insert into it). The user interface, while not flashy, is well thought-out and easy to understand. Administering the device and installing applications are both a breeze using it.

I have several items of ZyXEL hardware and they generally tend to be well-made yet affordable. The NSA325 v2 is the same, plus it has features that some other NAS enclosures lack, such as support for web publishing, Dropbox and Apple's Time Machine. If "bang for your buck" is what you're looking for, then you could do a lot worse than v2 of ZyXEL's NSA325.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This ZyXEL NSA325 v2 2 Bay Power Plus Media Server is a cheap entry level diskless NAS enclosure that uses a fairly decent 1.6ghz processor and 512MB memory. These hardware specifications are quite sufficient for a 2 bay home NAS and equally as powerful as some more expensive options. The NAS can accommodate both 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch hard drives which are secured to the plastic trays using screws. This is the first NAS I've used that uses screws, but it's not too much of an issue and keeps the cost of the NAS down. The enclosure is also almost entirely made of plastic (apart from the metal back), so it does feel quite cheap.

Setting up the NAS is very straightforward and I was up and running within minutes, with two 2TB WD Red HDD's fitted. There are some very brief setup instructions which are clear and easy to follow. This NAS is slightly noisier than my other NAS enclosures from QNAP, Synology, WD and Netgear. There's an audible hum, which could be annoying for some.

With the NAS powered on, You can either install the included NAS Starter Utility software to find, set up and manage the NAS or you can bypass the software and connect directly to the NAS via your web browser. This NAS doesn't have a screen, so it's not quite as easy to find it's assigned IP address. You can locate the NAS IP address via your router, but I personally use the "fing" android app, because it gives me a comprehensive list of everything connected on my network, with each device easily identified using device information, IP address and Mac address. Once you've located the IP, simply enter it into your browser address bar and login with the user: admin / password: 1234, when prompted.

The dashboard user interface is very basic and dated.

This budget NAS enclosure offers RAID-1 protection for your data, easy network connectivity and a fair selection of downloadable apps to provide a variety of functionality. On the downside, it looks cheap and plasticky and that it makes a bit more noise than you'd ideally like. You also need to be a bit careful not to accidentally overwrite your data if one of the disks fails.

My first impression was that although the front panel is glossy black plastic, the rest of the box looks like its made of cheap plastic. Opening the front to install disks didn't improve on that first impression: the front cover needs to be firmly pressed and slid to the left, whereupon it comes off. There are no hinges. The disk caddies are very basic plastic trays, held in place by a basic plastic clip. On the plus side, there are mounting holes for both 2.5" and 3.5" disks, and the holes for the 3.5" disks have rubber grommets to reduce vibration. The power supply is a generic 12V 5A unit. There are 2 x USB 2.0 port on the back and a single USB 3.0 port on the front. The fan is a large 80mm fan, which is much quieter than the 40mm fan on my D-Link ShareCenter Pulse, but it is still noticeable, especially as the pitch changes up and down every few seconds. There is also an intermittent buzz that seems to be a resonance on the back panel. Additionally, the entire unit vibrates from the disk drives, and this makes my desk vibrate too - I cured this by putting it on a foam pad.

Setting up the unit is straightforward. There's an application you can use, but I just logged in to the web interface. It's not completely compatible with Chrome, so I used Internet Explorer.

Great value at the moment. Mine came with a promo offer that included a WD Red 1Tb drive, hooked up with a spare 1Tb drive I had spare and this is a bargain.

Does all I wanted and loads I will never use and is a doddle to set up. Mine is whisper quiet despite me buying a silent fan as a lot of reviews said it was noisy so I must have a good one.

For £96 I'm well happy.
