This was the only novel written by Max Beerbohm, and this edition contains the illustrations by the author which were originally only meant for a private copy for himself. A comedy classic, this book is satire, parody and farce, along with fantastical elements.
When Zuleika Dobson goes to stay with her grandad, the Warden of Judas College, Oxford, it is Eights Week. Zuleika is feted by all the young men, but alas, she doesn't like men who fall at her feet, she prefers a man who seems oblivious to her charms. In the Duke of Dorset, Zuleika thinks she has found her man, until that is he tells of his love for her. When he vows to lay down his life for her, things suddenly take on a life of their own, leading to some startling consequences.
Although before you are even a third through this book, you know what will happen, that doesn't put you off. Zuleika isn't arguably that beautiful, and the conjuring tricks that she does for a living aren't that particularly well done, but all the men love her. Completely bonkers this is a book that you can easily lose yourself in, and that probably explains why, now that this book is in its hundredth year it has still remained popular.
This lovely little cloth bound hardback edition as well as having the original illustrations by Max Beerbohm, has an afterword, and an integral cloth bookmark, as well as of being a size that will easily slip into a pocket.
