The second novel by Jon George exploring similar themes to his first. Whilst not as popular or as well recognised as he should be, this author leaves the reader asking questions of themselves, causing them to examine how they would react in various situations. Well worth a read especially if you're after something different with a touch of English satire and humour.

Jon George sets most of this in Orford Ness, a nature reserve and WW2 area of interest. He makes this come vividly alive and having looked up on the web that its a real place, I've added it to my list of places to visit one day.
Anyway, back to the book, the synopsis provided by Amazon covers quite a lot of the book so I won't repeat it here. I found the start of the book confusing as it tries to do do much too soon - introduces both of the main characters and promptly gives each a flashback. I perservered and after about 30 pages got into the swing of the book and thought it was a really good story. The difficult start is why I've rated it at 4 stars and not 5.
Once the book gets going, it cleverly wraps in a lot of just into the future science, the historical flashbacks come across as well researched, very human and cover areas that were mostly new to me. I found the flashbacks interesting even though I'm pretty tired of WW2 as a topic! Speaking as someone who's done research, the research establishment where Jake works was very true to life.
So, good underlying premise, gripping story writing, good background, believable characters. I'm definitely going to be buying Jon George's next book.
