Quite a good book if you're looking for a brief history of how America became the biggest consumer of oil.

Tells a potted history of how oil and autos became the darlings of America and an insight into the global politics of oil. Interesting discussion on the energy challenges facing China and India and how they may avoid becoming oil dependant however it barely addresses "the car of the future". Information on current and future developments of the car are superficial and non-technical.

Micropower energy schemes are mentioned as a possible solution to man's energy problems but a comparable alternative for vehicle fuel is dismissed in less than a sentence with no discussion or supporting argument. Doesn't explore the conflicts between biofuels and food.

An interesting book but the title and cover text (focussing on cars) is misleading.

Authors Iain Carson and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran depict "Big Oil" and "Big Auto" as the engines behind much of the world's climate problem. Rather than condemn both, they look ahead and describe how China or the U.S., with the help of major car manufacturers, could lead the way to an oil-free future. They understand that personal transportation is too beneficial to dismiss out of hand, but that it must change. They acknowledge that the world will not run out of oil any time soon, but caution that the remaining concentrations are in the hands of countries that are unfriendly to big oil companies and the West. Moving away from foreign oil, requiring greater fuel efficiency and using biofuels look like the right first steps, they explain. The authors expect the batteries, fuel cells and even hydrogen - their particular long-term dream - to dominate in the future. They note alternatives to their vision, but express their opinions quite firmly. You may bristle if you disagree with a point or two, but getAbstract finds their overall emphasis on weaning cars from oil and driving into a prosperous postcarbon future quite interesting, along with their plea to readers to become part of grassroots movements for change.

I agree with all that F. McMillan has said before me.

I learned a lot from this book though. It was interesting to see how Toyota, which started selling cars in America to sneers of derision from Detroit, went on to surpass GM as #1 car company in America in just 50 years. Toyota had vision while GM and the other American companies became dinosaurs.

According to the book, a mass switch to an alternative, no-petroleum power source for cars, such as hydrogen fuel cells, could be much closer than I realised.

Worth reading, but starts to waffle in the closing chapters.
