Does the job well 27 April 2011
This little plastic box gets a better and faster connection than my old Netgear DGN3500 modem/router. I have paired it with an expensive Cisco/Linksys E4200 wireless router rather than having an all-in-one modem/wireless router. I wish I had bought one with four ethernet ports rather than one so that I could have other stuff connected directly to it such as a Vodafone Sure Signal femtocell, but that's my fault, not Zoom's.

Blast from the past! 19 Feb 2011
By Mr. J R
My not-so-old Netgear DG834 v3 Modem-Router just died on me so I was looking around for a replacement.

I had considered getting another Netgear router or swapping over to Linksys but as I was searching review sites (using my spare ADSL Nation modem) I came across an old brand name I knew from the dial-up days! Zoom had a reputation for being one of the best manufacturers of modems back then and now owns its rival Hayes from the same dial-up period.
So I thought, let's be different and try a reputable brand name from the past and I've certainly not been disappointed.

For the price this little box punches well above its weight. It offers a range of ADSL2 and 2+ capabilities, easy and advanced configurations, advanced firewall and simple installation to get working straight away.

Although this only has one Ethernet port it can still be used as a router in conjunction with a network switch to easily share broadband access across a network to other computers.
I've got mine connected up to a Netgear VPN Firewall (FVS338). It proved not only to be compatible but was easier to set up than the Netgear router I had previously used with it.

The Zoom software features a Basic automatic detection for those who are not so tech-savy but it certainly does not limit the advanced options. For the power user there is a host of settings, features and information to be found. It is a wired modem (which I prefer) rather than wireless but I suspect it could be connected to an existing wireless router very easily if you so wished.

My old Netgear DG834 v3 Modem-Router did have trouble with Skype (which is well documented for this version despite firmware upgrades) but using the Zoom modem has completely transformed Skype video calls for the better - even using the Linux Beta (2.1) of Skype.

I've found it compatible with both my main Linux (Ubuntu 10.10 and Unbutu 10.04) systems and my Windows XP backup. It claims to be fine with Macs too and I can see no reason why it wouldn't be.

It's been easy to install and there have been no obvious problems. It was well worth the purchase price. I've only had it a few days but I highly recommend it. Thanks for reading!

Be very wary, not only is support very poor - but I suspect this unit to be insecure and open to remote attacks.

Be aware the unit ships with THREE user accounts on it; 'Admin','support' and 'user'. Now, whilst you are likely to change 'Admin/zoomadsl' to something far more secure, you'll probably miss the other two accounts which cannot be disabled as the danger and context is not immediately obvious. The passwords (which are not documented) are 'support' and 'user'. These accounts can be used to make serious changes to the device, including replacing the firmware.

Under the hood the thing is actually a Broadcom BCM96338 ADSL Router running a modified old version of Busybox (V1.0). This is reported to contain a number of vulnerabilities and my own unit was physically remotely compromised. The unit had a spoofing DNS proxy installed/called on it, and Iptables rules to intercept DNS and WEB requests. A real 'man in the middle' job. You would think that securing the unit by disabling remote/WAN port remote access would stop remote attackers gaining access, but it didn't.

Zoom Tech support was slow and poor. They were rude and technically out of their depth and made virtually no attempt to deal professionally with this. Basically it's now a useless brick and it's only a few months old.

I'd strongly recommend that you steer clear of this router - and probably all Zoom ADSL products as they probably have a similar core architecture - until Zoom examine this problem, issue a patch and sort their lousy support and customer service out.
