One of the most annoying aspects of this modem is the time taken for it to become available after a PC boots up. Having to wait anywhere up to two minutes for the modem to become available proved painful at best...
The uninstall process to hangs nearing the end of the uninstall process, without the uninstalling all it's components. Trying then to re-installed proved impossible, with Windows refusing to recognise the hardware.
Use of a telephone proved impossible due to white noise on line. This only occured with this particular modem, using all the same filters etc as used with other modems.
Modem was used with four new PCs of varying makes, each running fully patched versions of XP Professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value! 23 April 2009
By v
I've had this wired modem since 2003 on a Windows XP PC, working on a 2MB inernet connection, and it has stood the test of time.

If the internet connection went suddenly off, it was always the fault of wiring becoming loose or ISP trouble.

For the price it comes for, i's a great product! I was initially advised by my ISP provider to buy the same type of modem at a higher price from them (no surprise there!) or they would be unable to provide tech support, but I don't like wasting money, if I can avoid it (nor soft ISP blackmail) so I decided to stay with Zoom and I haven't regretted it!

I have never needed to call Zoom tech support, so I can't say anything about their service quality.

This modem is not suitable for connecting more than one PC, and is not compatible with Vista, although if you can borrow a Vista compatible modem, and connect to the Internet you can, apparently, download from Zoom a driver update which will make it compatible.

If you need to connect more than one PC to your internet you will need to go for a wireless modem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value 11 May 2009
By Chode
First thing to say is this now works with Vista. It ships with Vista drivers on the CD and the printed manual has been rewritten to include setting up with Vista. Vista drivers are on Zoom's website. Also not mentioned in the box contents is it includes one filter.
I brought this to replace the old BT Voyager modem on my dad's PC as that no longer works with Vista. He just wanted something that done the same job and it does. It's roughly the same size as well and is USB powered. When setting up, be sure you use your full user name/email address, i.e 'username@aol.com' and not just 'username'. That may sound obvious but easily overlooked.
There is also a phone socket on the back to plug a normal telephone in. Works with AOL. All in all, a good value modem that's not cheap looking and works with Vista.

5.0 out of 5 stars You said it! 13 May 2007
I fully endorse Mr Clancy's review. This is the easiest modem I've ever used. I've also had another modem that uses the same sort of Connexant system, but it's about the size of a paperback and in a boring beige, not the cute black box (about the size of a pack of cards) that the Zoom one is. It's dead easy to set up: just plug it in, put in the CD and follow the instructions to install the drivers. You should then see two shortcuts on your desktop. Double-click on the one marked 'Zoom PPP DSL' enter the username and password your ISP will have given you, and in the 'phone number' box type in either several zeros, or "0.38", and press 'Dial'. It should connect almost straightaway. The other shortcut is to the control panel, which is really handy, as if there is a problem, it'll tell you whether it's the modem, the line, or the remote computer.

I'm really surprised that one of the reviewers has found it takes a long time to appear after booting up - on mine, it's one of the first things to load up, and I've usually connected by the time everthing else has loaded. As for noise, that can happen with other makes of modem too, if you have extensions and you don't have a microfilter in each one of them (supposedly, you only need one filter, in the socket you're using, but trust me, that isn't always the case - if you get noise, just stick microfilters in all the phone sockets, even if they don't have phones in them and Bob will be your mother's brother).

Great product. I've recommended it to several friends, and none of them have had any problems. It's great for broadband novices, because it's so easy to use.
