4.0 out of 5 stars Good product 31 Jan 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good modem. I installed 2 of them mainly for an upload application. Worked first time with minimal configuration and seems to be fairly robust in retaining 3G signal. It has a good strong wifi signal. I will update my post if I experience anything different. A word of warning, this router (and most other routers), will not work with all dongles. Check the compatibility carefully before you buy this or any router.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice bit of kit, if you don't want VPN 1 May 2010
By Robrik
Initially, I had great hopes for this router. Small and unobtrusive, it has decent network speed and passable range (up to 10m through 1 wall and two floors). A definite plus is that it not only works with many 3G USB stick modems, but it also can also connect to the internet via certain mobile phones when they're plugged into the USB port at the back: my Nokia was recognised and used without trouble. However, although it claims to allow VPN passthrough, the current firmware (ver. 1.0.6) does not support PPTP VPN connections unless one disables the router's security firewall. This makes this router a less attractive option for users who need to VPN into a corporate network this way. Zoom assured me that future firmware will fix this, but haven't said when that will be.

I have been looking for a 3G router for a while to hopefully be able to replace my flakey wired broadband with a wireless 3G solution that would offer me more stability and be completely portable.

This unit is mid range in terms of price, I avoided the cheaper ones but did not want to fork out too much in case this experiment failed to work. the unit has a very small footprint and has a USB connection for a USB 3G stick, a LAN port and a WAN port. You can configure the unit to work with your ADSL/Cable with 3G as an automatic failover option or just use 3G/DSL. Mine is configured for just 3G.
If you require more LAN ports then you can always add a secondary switch of your own choice.

Wireless LAN reception is excellent, offering 802.11b,g and n and various security features such as WEP etc, including filtering via MAC addresses on either the wired and wireless interfaces.

Setting up the 3G was the most time consuming, I use a vodafone PAYG 3G dongle (K3565) which I had connected to a very long USB cable with the dongle situated in my loft for better 3G reception. this was working fine on my PC, but the router failed to see the dongle on the long cable. The dongle needs to be inserted directly into the unit, or use a very short USB cable for it to be correctly detected.

Next small problem was getting the dongle to connect to the vodafone network. it does work once you find out what the settings should be, so for any future purchases using a PAYG vodafone stick here are the connection details.

APN = ppbundle.internet
PIN CODE = <leave blank>
Dial = *99#
username = web
password = web
Authentication type = auto
Connection type = Auto (always on)*

*note you can configure the router to be always connected to 3G, or dial on demand, or connect manually via the web interface to the router.

it now works a treat, and I have my desktop, laptop and any other devices I need sharing my 3G connection via wifi and wired LAN. I recommend this little router to anyone wanting to share 3G or just want 3G as a failover solution to traditional broadband. you can also visit the Zoom website to check if your USB dongle is compatible with the unit, and also try googling to find out your specific username and APN details for the other 3G providers.
