Picture talking animals giving mating advice to a zookeeper who's an absolute loser with women, add a hefty dose of slapstick humour, and you've pretty much summed up Zookeeper. Griffin is a disaster with the ladies, as was proved by his failed marriage proposal to the self-absorbed Stephanie several years ago, but he's really good with animals. The animals have listened to Griffin pine over Stephanie for years, so when they overhear Stephanie saying that perhaps her rejection of Griffin was too hasty, they take action. They decide to help Griffin rekindle the relationship and become the alpha male that Stephanie wants him to be. The animals are masters at mating, but their plan to show Griffin how to act quickly breaks down and they inadvertently begin talking out loud to him. After his initial shock, Griffin starts to take the animals' advice seriously--from how to walk and roar to the extreme of marking his territory. Surprisingly, the animals' advice really works and Griffin is about to get everything he's ever dreamed of--or is he? There's plenty of star power in this film--from Kevin James as Griffin, to the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone as Joe the lion and Cher as his lioness, Adam Sandler as Donald the monkey, and Nick Nolte as Bernie the gorilla--but somehow they're all somewhat underwhelming. This film has more than its share of cheap laughs, often at the expense of some part of Griffin's body, and some viewers will find that just right for a night's entertainment. Those looking for a moral to the story will discover that it's wise to be careful what you wish for and that what you think you want may not be anything like what you really need. Zookeeper isn't a great film destined for repeated watchings, but it's not meant to be--it's a comedy that will make you laugh a bit today and forget it the second you leave the theatre. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

All the animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes (Kevin James). Finding himself more comfortable with a lion than a lady, Griffin decides the only way to get the girl of his dreams is to leave the zoo and find a more glamorous job to win her over. The animals, in a panic, decide to break their time-honored code of silence and reveal their biggest secret: they can talk. To keep Griffin from leaving, they decide to teach him the rules of courtship--animal style. Also featuring the voices of Cher, Nick Nolte, Adam Sandler and Sylvester Stallone.

Special Features:
  • Laughing is Contagious" blooper reel
  • "Bernie the Gorilla" featurette
  • "The Furry Co-stars" featurette
  • Creating the visual effects featurettes: "Making the Animals Talk", "Riding an Ostrich" and "Animal Meeting"

3.0 out of 5 stars average family entertainment 18 Jan 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Purchased this to watch during the Christmas holidays. Was expecting better, there were some good laughs but on the whole not the sort of movie that leaves a lasting impression. Kevin James excellent as always, the talking animals just did not do it for me. Even my 7-year old was not that impressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars same jokes, different film 25 Mar 2012
Format:Blu-ray
For all those who are ceaselessly amused by guys in monkey suits, please be aware that Zookeeper contains a winning sequence involving a man and a talking gorilla enjoying an evening at T.G.I. Friday's. If the film had run with this low-key lunacy for 90 minutes, many of the movie's failures could have been avoided.

Kevin James once again relies repeatedly on the standard "fat guy falling down" brand of slapstick humour that seems to be where he's most comfortable. If he's going to insist on carrying through with this lazy routine, at least he could work with people who have a flair for visual joke-telling rather than with a director who is better with the actors than he is with finding the right shots and the proper editing rhythms that build anticipation for a big comedic payoff.

Happy Madison, Adam Sandler's company, helped produce Zookeeper, and all of the familiar touches are there. Sandler himself is hoarding pretty much all the good lines as the voice of a monkey who has never met a problem he couldn't solve by using his thumbs.

All of this adds up to a familiar formula that has paid dividends at the box office in the past, but pretty much flat lined creatively just after The Water Boy.

At this point, the Sandler comedy juggernaut is just outright repeating itself, and while Zookeeper is certainly a better movie than a lot of bad comedy movies out there, just evolving past that to being merely forgettable from memorably bad isn't all that much to brag about.

3.0 out of 5 stars so so
Watchable and predictable comedy i gave it a generous 3 stars because it does have alittle bit of appeal and doesn't go off the too much on the reality path.
