Synopsis
This is a reflective and didactic novel signifying the importance of self-discovery and the search for true happiness. At 34, Sam Metcalfe's life looks pretty complete, even to himself. He has a good, solid job as a zookeeper in Washington, DC. At home Sam is equally the "keeper" for his nuclear family that includes his businesslike mother, ambitious sister and adolescent nephew. Sam's best friend, Laurel, has been there for him since late childhood, and he has started dating the super-handsome Tim McAllister, a local newscaster. But Sam's seemingly ideal existence begins to unravel as life takes its toll on one after the other of the people in his life. After his friend Laurel moves away and Sam breaks up with Tim, he decides to get away from it all and takes off to Brazil to escape and immerse himself in primate research. During this time alone, Sam ultimately finds himself and the courage to take control of his life and happiness. There has long been a void of good adult gay male role models. Many men will identify with Sam's journey and rejoice in knowing that the happiness humans seek comes from being true to oneself.
