Book Description

14 Jun 2012

Concerns about the recent explosions of diseases like HIV, the West Nile Virus, and other avian and swine flus that originate in animals have encouraged new efforts on a global scale to bridge the gap between animal and human medicine for the benefit of both. Zoobiquity is the first book to explore many of the human and animal health issues that overlap and provides new insight into the treatment of many diseases including diabetes, cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

But Zoobiquity is even bigger than health and academic medicine, and encompasses much more than our diseases and how to cure them. It sheds light on the evolution of hierarchies and similarities between a tribe of apes and a Fortune 500 company. It suggests that the ways we run our political and justice systems may overlap with how animals protect and defend their territories - and that examining this possibility in a scientifically credible way could help strengthen our institutions. It dangles the possibility that human parenting could be informed by a greater knowledge and respect for how our animal cousins solve issues of childcare, sibling rivalry and infertility.

Review

Fascinating reading about the similarities in both physiology and behaviour of people and animals (Temple Grandin )

Zoobiquity is full of fascinating stories of intersection between human and nonhuman medicine - fish that faint; dinosaur cancers; human treatments that cure dogs of melanoma; lessons from adolescent elephant behaviour that explain human teenagers. I was beguiled (Atul Gawande, M.D. )

Zoobiquity will alter our view of the human condition ... an amazing new book (The Sunday Times )

Book Description

Dr House meets Dr Doolitte in this 'big ideas book' that reminds us of the real biological connection between human and animals

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book 12 April 2013

I think this is a brilliant book. I work in the field but definitely think it would be accessible for those who don't. If you are struggling to buy a young adult a present and they like science/biology or just interesting factual stories I think it would be a great gift!

4.0 out of 5 stars We are more the same than we are different 16 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is filled with fascinating comparisons between humans and various animals in relation to our behaviours, health problems and social interactions. From these it is made very obvious that we share more of our biology and psychology than many people would care to admit. As a parent, it was particularly interesting to read about adolescence in other species, however, as a vet I did query some of the observations made and conclusions drawn by these medic authors. That did not reduce my enjoyment of this book which I found hard to put down. There is enough, but not too much science and also some humour and is very easy to read. If only more people would appreciate how much we have in common and how much we can gain from our relationships with animals, whether as pets or as fellow sentient creatures, the world would be a much better place.

4.0 out of 5 stars WE ARE ALL ANIMALS 8 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found interesting and unexpected insights in Zoobiquity. The book is a page-turner with a brisk pace, yet each story is well documented. The reader will find a wealth of info about the links between human beings and animals, inviting to a more porous perception of the borders existing between these two realms. Doctors and veterinaries should work shoulder to shoulder more often than they do today.
