Amazon.co.uk Review

Here's good news for animal lovers: another expansion pack for Microsoft's Zoo Tycoon. Marine Mania lets you build a water park like Sea World, complete with your own dancing penguins, bottle-nosed dolphins or your own version of Shamu the Killer Whale.

The expansion fits right into the existing core gameplay of Zoo Tycoon: you manage your park, listen to your customers, plan the layout well, listen to your "specialists" (zoo keepers) for the right mix of exhibit size and food for your various critters and watch everyone enjoy the park. Add an amphitheatre to any pen and you've got ample seating for a show. There are 20 marine animals (from jellyfish and sperm whales to orcas and great white sharks) and some animals double as terrific entertainers (dolphins, orcas, etc).

Once again, you can always mix animals, and of course the only violence comes from mixing carnivores with the gentler fishes. But Marine Mania is as kid friendly as ever, so the best you get is some thrashing during a Great White feeding frenzy, rather than red-tinted waters. Drop a human in the pool and they simply swim out. Darn. Keeping with the kid friendly theme the game also features an encyclopaedia entry on each critter, which makes the gameplay almost as educational as a trip to a real water park.

The only problems are the game engine and graphics. Microsoft targeted low-end computers, which is fine, but as time goes on each expansion pack looks more and more behind the times. The animations in Marine Mania are simple and quickly become boring to watch and that's something you should never have to say about a shark feeding frenzy or dolphins performing tricks. Still, the expansion is an absolute must for fans of the original game. --Andrew S Bub

4.0 out of 5 stars Does it live up to Dino Digs, or pass it?, 19 Nov 2002
This review is from: Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania Add On (Video Game)
First impressions of this game were....WOW!! You can do so many things with the new additions to Zoo Tycoon, and, unlike Dinosaur Digs, it's not simply a lot of new animals in existing pens with bigger fencing. Not that I'm knocking Dino Digs, but the new tanks are great - you can build sea or salt water tanks for your new marine animals, and you can also build show tanks for five show animals such as dolphins, Orcas and Great White Sharks. Apparently, although I'm not that good yet, you can now add water tank swimming areas to your polar bears' or crocodiles' exhibits.
Another plus: you can FINALLY tell your maintenance workers where to go! Or at least, what to do.
One problem: this game seems to make it much harder to earn money. Your guests seem to be much more fickle, and the tanks are so expensive you are twiddling your thumbs for months just to build one exhibit.
Keep your eyes open for the bonus "animal" Microsoft have given you which you must discover for yourself whilst decorating your marine tanks. That's all I'm going to say about it! :-)
Last of all, just WHO thought up these new CD grips in the Microsoft boxes? Nearly had heart failure just trying to extricate the CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Aquatic fun, 21 Nov 2002

Marine Mania is the second expansion pack for Microsoft's Zoo Tycoon game, following Dinosaur Digs.
This expansion lets you add aquatic life to your zoos, including dolphins, manta rays, jellyfish, otters, orcas and Great White Sharks. You can now also put on shows for your zoo guests, which let your animals perform tricks in front of audiences.
There's also a selection of aquatic themed buildings and attractions including an Aquarium, and swim-with-dolphins attractions for the guests.
If you enjoy the scenario games, there's also a handful of new challenges, each increasing in difficulty as before.
Marine Mania makes the game even more unlimited, and a lot more fun. It's definitely worth checking out if you own Zoo Tycoon, or if you like playing sim/management games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable, 13 Jan 2005

This review is from: Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania Add On (Video Game)
When i first got this game i thought it was fantastic, great new animals, new tanks and some great new fun places for the customers to visit.
The only drawback is that the tanks are very expensive and most animals require either very large or very high tanks and this really costs. It also makes zoo animals alot less popular.
Overall though, if you are a fan of Zoo Tycoon then i would definately recommend this add on, it certainly brings a lot more fun.
