Zoo Girl has no family. In the children's home, she feels lost and alone. On a trip to the zoo, she is accidentally left behind. But she soon receives a warm welcome from the animals - and when the keepers find her snuggled in a cage they know they have found a daughter at last. This striking picture book blends the appeal of animals and adventure with a heart-warming message that celebrates friends and family - making it a reassuring read to share with children feeling left out, and especially poignant for families facing a similar journey through adoption or fostering. The minimal text - just one or two words per page - allows readers room to absorb the striking illustrations and delve into Zoo Girl's story, using their imagination to reveal a new interpretation of the tale each time it is read. The result is a memorable picture book with a lasting impact that works off the page as well as on. Highly Commended in the 2011 Junior magazine Design Awards Picture Book of the Year category.

Rebecca Elliott's 'Zoo Girl' is a picture book with minimal but powerful text and moving, sombre illustrations. Children will easily engage with the emotions of a little girl who longs to be loved. Accidentally left behind on a trip to the zoo, this lonely child finds affection from the animals who care for her, but it is the zoo-keepers who ultimately offer her the love and family that she craves. Children will talk endlessly about this book, and teachers will love it. --Marilyn Brocklehurst, The Bookseller

'Zoo Girl' is a beautiful story about belonging told in very few words. The illustrations are amazing and the book is worth buying just for them. They are full of texture, richness of detail and warmth.
As a teacher I love the fact that there are so few words. It brings out lots of discussion from all primary-age students on issues such as belonging, family, adoption, loneliness and friendship. Children can also add their own text in class activities.
In my classroom the children are often drawn to the book and it is definately a favourite. Worth adding to any bookshelf!

"Zoo Girl" is told creatively with great illustrations, with only a word or phrase on each spread. The reader is shown a lovely story of a lonely orphan finding her home through her connection to the animals she loves.
