Product Description

Review

"Graphic designer Bruno Munari is one of the most inventive picture book creators I know. I have been inspired, entertained, and in awe of his work since I was a graphic design student in Germany more than 50 years ago. And Zoo has been one of my favorites. I am delighted that it is available once again for a new generation of picture book readers of all ages."

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful picture book 13 Mar 2012
By KikiD
Format:Hardcover
I hesitated in buying this book for many months because of the fact that it looked more like an art book that I wouldn't want my toddler to get dirty fingerprints over! It comes with a dust cover which I have removed as it would definitely have been ripped by now. So its not the most child friendly of bindings/prints but if you like lovely design books like me then you will love the quality and feel of the print of this book, plus its larger format really shows off the beautiful illustrations.

I wish I had bought this book sooner as my daughter loves it. She loves the illustrations and really enjoys recognising all of the animals. I think the captions in this book are a bit strange at times and somewhat superfluos. For example, I don't think a 2 year old understands that the fox would be hiding from the 'furrier' or that the flamingos know they are attractive so 'play at symmetry'. But having said that my little girl loves this book anyway, and I followed up this purchase by buying the abc book, which I also hesitated about since she has so many but I am quite glad I bought it in the end.

My one big criticism about this book is also the very thing that I love about it as well. I love the uncoated paper, the binding, the dust jacket, but if you have a thing about nice design/art books then you might have to buy two - so you can keep one looking good and let your baby/toddler loose on the other! I think the publisher should consider a more child proof binding......that and some of the random text is my reason for giving this a 4 star as opposed to a 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and quirky 27 May 2011

This would make a great present for a young child. Intriguing illustrations and one quirky phrase per page that really sticks in your memory. Or perhaps thats just because we read it so often! Beautiful quality edition and its quite large.

5.0 out of 5 stars High brow text for a low brow audience 15 Nov 2007
By Michael Sablone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There are a lot of animal books out there. There are a lot of zoo books out there. There are very few of said books that do it with this kind of ingenuity. The first time you read the lines "Flamingos know they are strange and beautiful and play at symmetry" to your 3 year old, you know you have stumbled on to a rare gem.

Will they know what symmetry is? Probably not, but you do -- and that is what is so great about this simple book. Everyone gets to enjoy the book, on whatever level they can appreciate it for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get read much 7 Dec 2012
By Sika - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this last year for my daughter's 4th birthday. She loves books - being read to and flipping through herself. I thought this would be a good one since it's mainly drawings. But it has not become her (or my) favorites. It's big and cumbersome and not as interesting as I was hoping. The drawings are nice but don't really tell much of a story. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a child who loves zoos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book 1 Sep 2011
By M. Bunker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm so glad I purchased this book. The art is wonderful and the descriptions of the animals are just a little cheeky. Both my 1.5 year old and my 3 year old love this book. It is requested for storytime often.
