Having used both Norton and Mcafee in the past I thought I would give Zone Alarm a go. Right choice! It works seemlessly with Norton System Works and AOL and is easy to use.I was using Norton Internet Security 2006 and although effective,it really slowed the day to day running of my computer.
If you want better cover and value and be able to work faster--this is for you!

First, I've used ZASS for years and been very happy with it. Indeed, I used to champion it to anyone who was buying security software. It was very good.

As of the version 7 "upgrade" it's now best described as pants.

It slugs the PCs (I have it on 3 of them) something awful.

It takes forever to scan.

Updates frequently fail.

You can't switch off automatic updates/scans without it telling you something's wrong - it isn't, I have a brain, I'd like to update and scan when I want to...

It has bugs where there were none before (e.g. it blanks the number of files scanned when it moves onto the Spyware scan - something it didn't used to do in the previous versions)

There is no proper support (at least without a second mortgage and even then...) as they expect users to support other users. Checkpoint don't even pay attention to the forums.

I think next time round I'll be looking for something else. This is worse than Norton now, and that's saying something.

I recently decided that I had had enough of Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2006 and would not be upgrading or renewing my subscription. After much reading on the subject I decided to try ZoneAlarm Security Suite as the feedback I had heard suggested that their AV was much improved and their firewall as sturdy as we have come to expect. With the dollar so weak at the moment it pays to order straight off their site as ZA-SS is incrementally updated so you get the very latest version (although, remember to keep a copy of the file backed up because you don't get a cd - obviously).

#A warning for ex-NIS users is that you really do need to uninstall every single component of Norton/Symantec you find, not just the add/remove programs but also from the registry (regedit.exe is suitable & free) and any files (using search) that are related to Norton/Symantec - just to be sure. If ZA-SS hangs when you install it, try installing in SafeMode (see help on the web before starting). I did and it was fine.#

Thoughts so far - simple to use (you can start it in full protection mode and then add programs and networks to the permissions list as you need them - safest way). No issues with Skype or IM. Clear instructions when an issue requires your attention. Takes a similar time to boot up as NIS but feels less intrusive (taskmanager says 23Mb is used by the client currently). The virus checker is slower but it combines it with a spyware check at the sametime which NIS didn't do (I run spybot anyway - both of which are happy to play together). Better to schedule the checks. One thing I've always liked is that it tells you when network activity (in/out) is occuring with a 2bar graphic equaliser on the taskbar. It's not annoying and makes you think about what you have running and keep security foremost in your mind.

Overall, I'm happy with ZoneAlarm and glad I made the switch.
