4.0 out of 5 stars Tin Tin meets C'thulu, 24 Jan 2008
This little volume is a real find, although it won't appeal to everyone. In fact, those Mignola fans expecting a Hell Boy style story will be sadly disappointed. True, the Zombieworld characters could be seen as early prototypes of the BPRD, but the real joy of this comic is in the artwork. Ignore the previous review. Only the cover is supplied by Mignola and, to be honest, that's Zombieworld's saving grace. Much as I love Mignola's work, he's not the greatest story teller in the world and Zombieworld - plotwise - is a little clunky. If it had taken itself seriously then this could have been a real stinker. But combine it with Pat McEown's wonderfully Tin Tin-esque art and what you get is a gloriously off-beat tale. It's open ended too, so who knows - it could be the start of something really fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars CHAMPION OF WORMS - CLASSIC MUST HAVE, 30 Nov 2005
This publication collects a three comic mini series also entitled "the champion of worms" the series is steeped in lovecraftian monsters and mystry and centers around a gang of "pyshic/archeological" experts brought in to investigate a theft at a museum, the team works very much like Alan Moores The league of extra-ordinary gentlemen and also has many roots that can be seen developing through the Hellboy and BPRD sagas written post this story by the masterind comic writer Mike Mignola. The story is easy to follow, fast paced but also focuses well on keeping the threads going so it makes sense and is credible. Art work is absolutly stunning and all mike mignola - no stand ins - its the real thing - a pre hellboy complete Mike Mignola story and a reeal must have. The only downside of this publication is unfortunatly the abrupt end of the series in volume 3 right at the point the end of the world sahow down is about to happen. That is disappoiting - it feels as though this book is the "part 1" of something greater and better, but that greater and better thing has never , unfortunaly happened. Its a worthy adition though to all comic book / horror shelves. If you like Hellboy / tomb raider / buffy / B.P.R.D / wierd voodoo / the darkness etc etc then this will appeal to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Omen for BPRD, 7 Jan 2009
I must admit from the very beginning of this review that I love most works of Mike Mignola, however it is not out of an obtuse bias, but rather an adoration for that which interests him and which he wishes to write about. Zombieworld is an intriguing piece of work. It culminates elements of the occult and horror that are in certain parts perhaps a little similiar to that audiences may be familiar with (ie zombies attacking) yet there are elements that are uniquely concocted in a manner that makes you question why it wasn't done before. Pat MacEown was relatively unknown to me before I read this but I feel the approach himself and Mignola chose to take was a very entertaining one: a wonderful mix- a crack team of occult experts, military, ancient cultures, a curse and of course zombies. In this way it reminded me quite a bit of B.P.R.D. Volume 9: 1946: 1946 v. 9 (B.P.R.D. (Graphic Novels)).The action is perhaps a bit too non-stop for some readers, yet the layers that each of the main characters is given in the space of 80 short pages is intriguing. No one character is a typical one dimensional space-filler, each serves a purpose and a select few have very dark and even disturbing elements to them. My only grievance with the work is that it is solitary, and as far as I know has no sequels.... even though it seems prime for the Quintet of Occultists to continue their adventures. However the little Quintent moulded and transformed in the mind of Mignola to the BPRD (Mike Mignola's B.P.R.D. Collection: Hollow Earth and Other Stories) and the epic Hellboy (Hellboy: Seed of Destruction v. 1 (Hellboy) (Hellboy (Dark Horse))) now is chief amongst Mignola's Champions, yet I feign and hope that someday the great creators Mignola and MacEown will look back at this old manuscript, give a smile and a nod and resurrect, perhaps in the Zombieworld or perhaps in the great world of Hellboy or BPRD, the marvellous, vibrant and terrific characters that had life breathed into them all those years ago....
