Synopsis

At the start of the 21st Century, a deadly virus has swept the Earth, wiping out most of its human populace. Now, only an isolated scattering of survivors remain. Among them; a film crew intent on making a documentary about the plague, a married couple who have picked up a mysterious hitchhiker, and a terrified group that has barricaded itself inside an old farm. Unbeknownst to them, the virus has created a breed of marauding zombies with a taste for human flesh. Told from the survivors’ point of view, THE ZOMBIE DIARIES charts the early days of the outbreak through to its devastating aftermath. The unnerving cinema verite style recalls THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, though the film is thematically closer to 28 DAYS LATER.

1.0 out of 5 stars slower than a half eaten zombie , 22 Sep 2007
By Martin Long (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not much can be said in praise of this film. The action, what little there is, crawls along and the 'blair witch' camera shots get annoying very quickly. Even hardcore zombie fans should avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars A braindead production.. Rating: ZERO stars., 8 Sep 2007
It is possible to make a low-budget film with basic equipment without having to resort to the 'mockumentary' or home movie camera style; But even this approach fails to hide almost unwatchable camerawork without any real Direction behind it. However, bad photography is the least of the Zombie Diaries' problems..

There's an almost total lack of plot, characterisation, story, acting talent, cinematography and Direction. In terms of the plot, this 'film' is comprised of all of the footage that a Director would normally leave on the cutting room floor. Pivotal dramatic moments that should propel a story and plot simply don't exist - it's as though the editor destroyed all of the key footage by accident and had to cobble together a film from the remaining rushes. As a result it lacks continuity, character development, a logical or engaging plot, and is devoid of central characters that we might identify with; Apparently the writer/director thinks that, in a zombie holocaust, the survivors argue a lot between themselves. In fact it's almost all they're capable of - other than committing irrational acts of stupidity, like using your last rifle/ammo to shoot zombies who aren't even within earshot, not to mention the ultimate illogic of the entire premise for this film: that people keep on using their video cameras even when stumbling through a zombie-infested forest.. At night.... When wounded... Hmmm, don't think so.)

The only merit I can give this effort is that the production team obviously pulled in a favour from a talented make-up and gore-effects person; but anyone who's seen a Romero zombie movie won't be overly-impressed by what's on offer here, and it's certainly not enough of a reason to seek out this collection of student-level camcorder clips.

Personally, I think Amazon should refund anyone who has purchased this DVD, as the way it's been presented is grossly misleading:

- The cover artwork (Wow! Talk about salesmanship. Hands up those of us who thought this would be a 28 Days Later/Dawn of the Dead style professional movie?)
- Three or four quotes from online horror-movie sites that sing its praises. Whoever these reviewers are, they should be ashamed of themselves. Perhaps they were involved in the making of this film..?? Who of us bought this DVD on the basis of cover reviews like "The Best UK Horror Film of the Year"? I have to surmise that there were no other UK Horror films in the running...
- The pre-release Amazon review rating - FIVE stars! I have to imagine that the people responsible for the initial review were allowed to do so because they're involved in the production of the movie or the marketing of the DVD.

Someone, somewhere, has made themselves very rich from the ingenious way this DVD has been marketed. As for the product itself - I feel like I've just bought a DVD of someone's GCSE media studies camcorder tapes.

Avoid like the (zombie) plague.

1.0 out of 5 stars the horror, the horror....., 28 Nov 2008
By Rob Sumner (devon, england) - See all my reviews
There is absolutely nothing positive to be said about this film. The acting, script (if there actually was one), photography and editing are so poor as to be laughable. It;s confusing, disjointed and just a terrible, terrible film.

The scariest part of it is that the film makers may return and foist another rotting carcass of cinematic dreck on us.
