Great XMAS or birthday gift for jazz lovers 8 Nov. 2001
By Yasee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Great Stuff!! If you like jazz you'll LOVE this CD. Looking forward to his next release...hard to believe it's James Zollar's first as a bandleader and not rehearsed. I knew this recording would not disappoint when I saw the list of veteran musicians with Zollar at the lead.
I kick back after a long hard day or, get a jumpstart in the morning "Soring with the bird." Its harmonies are melodic, fresh and fun!

Nice tribute to Bird, even if there's no alto sax 13 Jan. 2013
By James A. Vedda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Trumpeter Zollar offers an enjoyable rendering of 13 bop-era tunes, accompanied by some excellent sidemen in this 1997 album. I chose it based on the inclusion of some of my favorite players: Pete Christlieb on tenor sax, Andy Martin on trombone, and Bill Cunliffe on piano, all of whom deliver their usual superb solo work.
The arrangements aren't particularly imaginative, and Christlieb and Martin don't play on every track, but the performances are solid and pleasant to listen to. The album seems to hit its stride in track 6 ("The Song Is You") and keeps the enthusiasm going until the end. That's not to imply that tracks 1-5 are not good, just that their high points all come from the solos by Christlieb, Martin, and Cunliffe rather than Zollar or the overall group sound.
Surprisingly, the CD has no liner notes other than a list of the tunes. The date of the recording is not given. The players' names are shown in the cover art, but not associated with their instruments. (Other than those already mentioned, they include John Clayton on bass, Ron Eschete on guitar, and Paul Kreibich on drums.)
Overall, a good choice for listening to veteran soloists as they take choruses on some jazz standards. But be aware that this is a CD-R product, so some users may have problems with it. My CD player needed repeated "Play" commands to start the disc, but then it played with no problem. When I imported the tracks to iTunes, the process took far longer than usual, but completed without a glitch.
