Product Description

Product Description

MultiScanner i700 OneStep quickly and easily locates the edges and centre of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It also locates metal as well as live AC electrical wiring. The ultra-bright display screen, SpotLite Pointing System, and audio tone all indicate the location of the target. The signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets. Sensing depth and accuracy can vary due to moisture, content of materials, wall texture, and paint.

This is a great scanner, giving very positive and clear readings in all modes.
As with all scanners, take your time, and scan both axis slowly.
With care and a little practice, this is as good as any, and better than most.
Not cheap, but good value for the quality.
Would be nice if it came with a case.

Zircon introduced these scanners to the market over 30 years ago, and they are still a leading brand. This one discovers studs, copper pipes and nails etc, and AC cables. Follow the instructions and it works well. One negative aspect is the built in pencil marker. No-one would use such an instrument without a supply of pencils in their tool belt, and so the built in one is completely superfluous. The SpotLite LED pointer on the other hand is excellent. The other negative is the lack of a case. I may be over sensitive but I would be reluctant to lob this unprotected into a typical toolbox, so bear that in mind.

I had hoped that the Zircon i700 Multiscanner would offer a cost-effective solution for accurately locating Joists/beams/studs, live cables etc. within structural material.

An initial project involved accurately locating ceiling joists for securing a fluorescent light fitting on an Artex finished plasterboard surface.

The Zircon i700 has a couple of flexible rubber pads on the detection face, presumably to assist movement over surfaces - they are completely ineffective to the extent of being easily damaged when scanning anything but a smooth surface.

Consistent, relatively firm pressure is needed to perform a scan; with an irregular/textured surface an alternative is to attempt to hold a piece of thin and smooth material, such as hardboard over the area to be checked - this isn't easy/practical.

I have no doubt that the Zircon i700 can be an effective tool but it has its limits and at the price, in my opinion, they should be highlighted.

I can say that the Zircon i700 is a wonderfully reassuring piece of hardware to have in the toolbox whether you're a professional, or a DIY enthusiast (the latter being myself).

As a fan of Bosch, I had bought a Bosch PDO Multi Digital Detector last year and quickly sold it on as it was pretty much usless for its intended purpose (you can read my review on that here on Amazon, too).

What's most impressive with the Zircon i700 (production of this model discontinued in some countries) is its accuracy in finding studs/joists- from edge to edge, which is hugely advantageous. My application of this product was locating wooden joists/studs over plasterboard. It really is as accurate as the manufacturer's product video.

It's an expensive piece of equipment, but with the price tag comes quality. However, with such quality one would expect some form of protection for your investment in the form of a case, which, sadly, isn't included. I wouldn't let this deter you, as you can easily get a case (for the likes of a camera flashgun) to carry it in. It uses a 9V battery, which isn't included. Also, the 'How to' DVD wasn't included with my purchase.

I've been very impressed with this scanner it detects live cables, stud walls, copper pipe, even detected plastic pipe on a job. I'm very pleased with this tool. It already paid for its self on the first job I used it on worth every penny in my book. The only small negative about this product is that it would of been great if it had a carry case to protect it when putting it in the van or tool box. Apart from that I can't fault it great bit if kit.

as a building surveyor I need accurate and dependable equipment and the Zircon i700certainly fits the bill, it is easy to use us to set up and appears to be dependable. The only thing edition I wouldn't like is a suitable carrying case to prevent damage.

Having had a cheap detector for years I am delighted to report that this Multiscanner works extremely well. I have used it now on half a dozen jobs and it has detected studs and cables with ease.

An excellent product, first use to avoid a live cable when fixing to brickwork allowed me to drill with confidence within approximately 2 inches of a supply cable temporarily disconnected for safety.
