Bought this after going through the usual plethora of cheap junk that broke after the first charge of gas ran out.
"It's a Zippo", I thought, and if it follows its famous lighter cousin for quality, then I've nothing to worry about. ...and how right I was!

I've had this lighter for over 2 years now and it's still going strong. Apart from one small glitch where it once leaked out the gas overnight after I filled it. But I suspected a bit of dirt had got into the refill point, and sure enough, after a couple of 'blow throughs' with the butane refill canister it has never leaked since. It is used reasonably regularly at BBQ's in summer, but every day during the winter months up here in Scotland to light a wood burning stove, and my wife's smelly 'scented' candles.

It usually lights first time, every time, only rarely do I need to press the trigger a second time. Which brings me to the very small downside. The child proof button is a bit of a nuisance, but only mildly so. I would prefer to not have it at all and rely on common sense to ensure it stays out of the way of small children. Besides, (and this is the other very small gripe) the trigger takes a considerable amount of force to operate it, and to be honest, if a child is physically strong enough to activate the lighter mechanism, then they will almost certainly be old enough to overcome the child lock.

Small gripes aside, it does exactly what it's supposed to time after time after time, and after two years of very reliable service I feel qualified to offer a fair opinion.

Multi purpose indeed. 16 Dec 2009

Have you ever burned your fingers trying to light a candle with a conventional lighter or a match? I know that I have... After having this happening to me one too many times I decided that it was time to get a lighter for the job.
I have to admit as soon as I saw that Zippo do these lighters I knew what I was getting (I am a bit biased I must say). I got the lighter about ten day ago and I am very happy with it. It has an adjustable flame and it's of course refillable and you get the Zippo guarantee to back the product. It's a very presentable lighter (it comes in a very nice box too) and it can be used for lighting bbqs', fireplaces and gas hobs too. The only glitch about this product (I found) was the child resistant safety button. Don't get me wrong it does by far what it's meant to do but I found it a bit uncomfortable to use (then again it might be me...)
All in all a very good lighter that does what it is designed to do. 4 *.

I've had my fingers burnt (pardon the pun) by purchasing a cheapo candle lighter from a local shop that only cost a few quid, but only ended up working a few weeks, and when it was working the flame was weak and weedy and sometimes it would take several clicks to light.

With summer approaching, and lots of citronella candles to light to keep the evil insects at bay, I couldn't be bothered to struggle any longer, so went on the lookout for a decent quality candle lighter. Ulimately I narrowed it down to the Brabantia one and this Zippo. Ultimately I went for the Zippo as although it was a little more expensive, it looked more... industrial and more metallic. I can't speak for the Brabantia as I've not handled it in person, but I can whole-heartedly say I am more than happy with this Zippo. It's nicely weighted and feels very good quality. The clicker and safety latch are a little firm to use, but that's all the more re-assuring. It takes Butane gas instead of lighter fluid, which is fine. The flame it produces is good and it lights first time. I don't know how long it will last, or whether I will ultimately have any problems with it, but the signs are good...

Safety device is a little fiddly, but is meant to be to prevent mis-use by children. It lights first time everytime and is 100% better than those items which just create a spark. Read more
