Bloomin Great! 5 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
In which British Sea Power achieve that state of grace where all they touch is gold. This is a stupendous EP, though perhaps I only realised that after about the 5th listen. Loads of variety in this, covering electro-glam (Yes really!) - (KW-hr), the raucous punky Can we do It (in the vein of apologies for insect life), Bear which is getting referenced for the lyrics "Reading the Daily Star...Watching the X-Factor... Never Thought You Could Fall So Far", made me feel a bit guilty as I watched the early rounds of the Factor. My favourites though that for me tower above the others are Cleaning Out The Rooms and my favourite ever track from BSP - Retreat (the bonus track), it has echoes of Spacemen 3/Spiritualised and as soon as I hear the opening bars it takes me places - both of these take their time and Build... They are in the Emperor phase of their career, at the height of their powers, it's just ace isn't it.

This EP from British Sea Power is one of the best releases of 2010. That's including albums by the way, because at 43 minutes this EP is as long as most modern albums.

The tracks themselves are some of BSP's most epic songs yet, with the title track kicking it off in style. The group shouting "What's your maximum?" at you through the headphones almost makes me want to yell out in response, which wouldn't be a great thing to happen in public places. The second track is the only one which features on their new album, a good thing as it means we get an EP full of songs that we won't see elsewhere! This second track, "Cleaning Out The Rooms", is my highlight of the EP, a swelling epic that soothes and encompasses you with its warmth. The fourth track "Bear" is a decent track, building to a grand finish which probably goes on a bit too long for my liking. "Mongk" is a strong grower of a track, one that I overlooked on the first few listens, but after a while you'll find yourself repeating the catchy lyrics "sacrifice your eyes to blind mice" to yourself. "kWh" is a sexy song that draws obvious vocal comparisons with the electronic singing in some of Daft Punk's music, but that's pretty much where the semblance to anything else I've heard ends; it really is a refreshing style. The final hidden track "Retreat" is another laid back song that, while not as memorable or affecting as "Cleaning Out The Rooms", delivers a fitting close to the EP.

If you're a fan of BSP you should thoroughly enjoy the contents of this EP. If you've never heard of BSP and have somehow stumbled onto the review section of this webpage, I strongly urge you to listen to their music, although starting with this EP is probably not recommended (try "Do You Like Rock Music?" or "Open Season" for a good introduction to the band.)
Oh and the artwork on the case and CD itself (simple as it is) makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside and reminds me of why I still love purchasing CD's.

Almost perfect. 28 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
But not quite. BSP are evolving and it is evolution in it's best form. This album is certainley a bit of everything and is BSP having a bit of a play about with different ideas. On the plus side there is some great songs on here from the opening title with it's leanings towards Arcade Fire to the beautiful 'Bear' and 'Cleaning Out The Rooms' which the latter almost made me dance on the way to work (always a bad thing!). To the ending of 'KWH' which threw me totally off guard with it's glam rock electronica. I think the 'Mongk' is ok and because of this and the not so brilliant lyrics i wouldn't give it full marks but am very excited about the new album. Also the line 'Saw you reading the Daily Star, saw you watching the X Factor, and wondered how you fell so far' is genius. Definitley a good lead up to the new release.
