This EP from British Sea Power is one of the best releases of 2010. That's including albums by the way, because at 43 minutes this EP is as long as most modern albums.
The tracks themselves are some of BSP's most epic songs yet, with the title track kicking it off in style. The group shouting "What's your maximum?" at you through the headphones almost makes me want to yell out in response, which wouldn't be a great thing to happen in public places. The second track is the only one which features on their new album, a good thing as it means we get an EP full of songs that we won't see elsewhere! This second track, "Cleaning Out The Rooms", is my highlight of the EP, a swelling epic that soothes and encompasses you with its warmth. The fourth track "Bear" is a decent track, building to a grand finish which probably goes on a bit too long for my liking. "Mongk" is a strong grower of a track, one that I overlooked on the first few listens, but after a while you'll find yourself repeating the catchy lyrics "sacrifice your eyes to blind mice" to yourself. "kWh" is a sexy song that draws obvious vocal comparisons with the electronic singing in some of Daft Punk's music, but that's pretty much where the semblance to anything else I've heard ends; it really is a refreshing style. The final hidden track "Retreat" is another laid back song that, while not as memorable or affecting as "Cleaning Out The Rooms", delivers a fitting close to the EP.
If you're a fan of BSP you should thoroughly enjoy the contents of this EP. If you've never heard of BSP and have somehow stumbled onto the review section of this webpage, I strongly urge you to listen to their music, although starting with this EP is probably not recommended (try "Do You Like Rock Music?" or "Open Season" for a good introduction to the band.)
Oh and the artwork on the case and CD itself (simple as it is) makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside and reminds me of why I still love purchasing CD's.
