This is an exceptional psych/prog album. It has eight tracks, not six. The Radioactive version is purportedly mastered from vinyl and the sound suffers as a result. An alternative CD is available in a Digipak from Lion Records of Germany and, although more expensive, has a considerably better sound. The Lion version is also available via Amazon and you can read some excellent reviews there. Get this album, but not the Radioactive version.

Zerfas was a private pressing from around 1970. There are only 6 tracks on the album but they are of an above average standard. The music is psych tinged rock (featuring some good guitar work and some backwards effects and phasing) that sometimes sounds a bit cliched but if you take it with a pinch of salt is worth listening to. I wouldn't rate it as a first division album but if you are really interested in this era and type of music it is worth purchasing.

Great Lost Record Deserves Far Better 27 Mar. 2007
By Stan Denski - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Created by 4 very young Midwestern kids in 1973 on a 4-track and with the invaluable help of a GREAT engineer this album is simply magnificent. There's a web site called the Acid Archives where a very lengthy review can be found and it's very much worth reading. The songs are fantastic, imaginative, incredibly creative. The musicianship is top notch as well. For a record that was pressed in 500 copies and then forgotten for 30 years I can't speak highly enough.

HOWEVER... when I got a copy of the LONG AWAITED CD reissue (an LP reissue was done in 1994) I stuck it on to play for friends who'd never heard it and I was horrified! I don't mind vinyl transfers - in fact I often prefer them because they allow you to hear the sound of the original pressing. But this CD was taken from a poor condition LP and then layers of EQ and other devices were employed to cover that up. The effect? To hear what this sounds like, stick on an original LP or the 1994 master tapes LP reissue, and then take all your heaviest winter coats and blankets and lay them over your speakers. That'd do it.

The guy who did the 1994 LP reissue claimed the CD was "coming out in a month" in late 1994. Now it's 13 years later and it's never going to happen. Not ever. It's criminal. All you can do is find someone to trade you a good CDR of the LP or find a copy of the 1994 reissue vinyl. There's a Greek bootleg LP from around 1999 that doesn't look very good but was taken from the 94 LP and sounds fine. Just avoid the Radioactive CD as if it were radioactive for this title!!!
