4.0 out of 5 stars Fourth in the "Time Wars" series, 4 Jun 2007
By Marshall Lord (Whitehaven, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Zenda Vendetta (Paperback)
"The Zenda Vendetta" is the fourth of Simon Hawke's 12 "Time Wars" novels. This is a humorous and well written series about a group of Time Commandos whose mission is to prevent other time travellers from causing damage to history.

In some of these books, the Time Commandos are up against rogue individuals or groups of terrorists who are trying to subert the past for their own purposes: sometimes they come up against operatives from rival alternative futures who are trying to defend their own versions of history.

In the second book in the series, the Time Commandos defeated a terrorist group known as the Timekeepers. Unfortunately it now appears that some of the group escaped. At the start of "The Zenda Vendetta" it becomes apparent that the Timekeepers have both infiltrated the Temporal Intelligence Agency, and kidnapped or killed Rudolf Rassendyll to prevent him from saving the Ruritanian monarchy. Putting the timeline back together will be the most difficult challenge the Time Commandos have faced ...

All 12 books in this series pay humorous homage to a great work of literature, to a set of historical events, or both. Most of these books go back to the time and events of a classic novel, in this case, obviously, "The Prizoner of Zenda," and revisit the events of that novel, usually with a humorous slant.

The books are best read in the correct sequence, as follows (I have put the name of the literary work and/or historical events associated with each book in brackets afterwards)

1) The Ivanhoe Gambit (Ivanhoe)
2) The Timekeeper Conspiracy (The Three Musketeers)
3) The Pimpernel Plot (French Revolution & terror/Scarlet Pimpernel)
4) The Zenda Vendetta (The Prisoner of Zenda)
5) The Nautilus Sanction (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
6) The Kyber Connection (works of Rudyard Kipling/early life of Churchill)
7) The Argonaut Affair (Jason and the quest for the Golden Fleece)
8) The Dracula Caper (Sherlock Homes meets Bram Stoker's Count Dracula)
9) The Lilliput Legion (Gulliver's travels)
10) The Hellfire Rebellion (American War of Independence/Hellfire Club)
11) The Cleopatra Crisis (Caesar and Cleopatra)
12) The Six-gun solution (Gunfight at the OK Corral)

Not terribly serious but very good fun: I can recommend this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Swords and, er, blasters at dawn, 29 Sep 2004
By JA Fairhurst "johnfair" (Edgeley, Stockport) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Like Dr Who's original remit, Simon Hawke had decided to send his characters back into the past where they could interact in various historical scenarios, though in Simon Hawke's case, the historical scenarios generally come from novels, and in this case we are looking at the Prisoner of Zenda. In this case, the Time Commandos have to stop a bunch of terrorists destroying the fabric of time after they had hijacked a shipment of blasters and taken them back to the kingdom of Ruritania, where they had killed the ruler in an attempt to destroy the future.
This is a great book, almost as swashbuckling as its original and with those blasters making life fun for our heroes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blasters AND Swords!, 7 Sep 2004

Detailed to prevent the Time stream from being altered by rogue travellers, the Army's First Division find themselves in the Balkans trying to make sure that history follows the events written about in The Prisoner of Zenda.
Hawke's puropse in these Time war series was to get people interested in some of the classics of literature but the plots are fast enough moving in their own right.

4.0 out of 5 stars A MASTER WRITER AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS CAREER!
The Timewars series was some of the best sci-fi/action series that I have ever read. I read them years ago and kept them all and plan on re-reading them. A must read.
