Oriental medicine concerns itself with using natural powers to effect a cure. This book is a very good examination and explanation of the role shiatsu plays in creating a therapeutic approach that is completely in harmony with the patient's whole body.

The chapter on self shiatsu is worth the cover price on its own.

I am a student who has recently started a course in complementary therapies at The University of Derby. I chose to study the Shiatsu pathway and this book has shown me why that was a good decision. It explains things clearly without patronising the reader. It also uses over 370 figures to illustrate techniques, meridians and so on, to re-enforce what the author has written. I also have to agree with 'Healing Spirit', the self shiatsu section is very useful, after all, how can you practice shiatsu effectively if you feel terrible yourself. Also, it's great value and I've found, delivered quickly by Amazon.

This is a modern classic 10 May 2000

I cannot rate this book highly enough. It is an invaluable resource for professional Shiatsu practitioners or beginners. Masunaga takes you immediately into the world of Oriental Medicine with clear, concise descriptions of the theories that make OM a powerful healing force in the world today.

There are literally hundreds of photos, detailing his particular Shiatsu style, that will allow anyone to understand how to apply the techniques described. He also has a fine section on energetic diagnosis to assist with understanding when to apply Shiatsu and which techniques to use.

An additional section provides a series of Shiatsu stretches with manipulations to do for yourself. These are simple and effective. Learn them and use for your own well-being.

If you only buy one book on Shiatsu, let it be this one. It has been around for over 20 years and is still the one that I recommend to my patients for home helth care. I also use it when teaching graduate students at the Seven Gates Institute.
