Inspiring 25 Oct 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Perhaps the most inspiring lesson I drew from this wonderful book is contained in the essay Run Fast, Stand Still, in which Bradbury urges the writer to write very quickly, pushing aside the critical voice inside your head that can freeze the hand as it hovers over the page, and put down the first thing that occurs to you. In this way you are able to get your 1,000 words a day done in ragtime and then go back and do the all-important revision.
Bradbury's writing style is so intoxicating - just like his short stories and novels - that you'll fly through this book.
His enthusiasm for writing - for WORK - is infectious, and this book has done much to reignite my desire to write.

I normally do not like such "how to" books, but this one is different because Mr. Bradbury doesn't offer a set of strict guidelines. Instead, he gives thoughtful and informative suggestions on "releasing the creative genius within you." From giving methods of writing that he has practiced over the years, such as tapping into one's muse or subconscious in order to release one's full potential and originality, to using examples from his own immense body of work, Mr. Bradbury shows how writing can be not only an enjoyable process, but a cathartic one as well. He is an impassioned individual with uncanny insight, and I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in writing.

A writer will often go to another writer who is more
successful than they are for advice. So if I told you
that Ray Bradbury, unarguably one of the pillars of the
sci-fi/fantasy community, was going to give you some words
of wisdom about your writing career, I think you'd want
the chance, right? Well, here it is. Bradbury has written
a book that will jump-start anybody's creativity, be you writer, painter, musician--whatever. And before you say,
"Argh! Another dry, useless 'How to Write Fiction'
self-help book!" remember that this is Bradbury we're
talking about here. Always insightful and amusing, the
only reason this book is not an afternoon read is because
it gives you to much to think about in each individual
essay. This is a staple among gifts I give to artistic
friends, and a must-read for any creative person.

A rare book that offers insights into the writing process.
