Product Description

Product Description

My name is Zelah Green and I am a Cleanaholic. I spend most of my life on Germ Alert. Or Dirt Alert. It's a miracle I ever get to school. My life was going OK despite that - you know, school, best friend, bad hair days - until four weeks ago. That's when Dad vanished. Now my stepmother has packed me off to a place with some crazy people. So I'm stuck with the Doc and Alice, Lib, Caro and Sol.Sol, who doesn't speak. Sol, who has brown eyes and olive skin. Sol, who I actually want to touch. Now I'm on Flirt Alert!Maybe, just maybe, something good could happen...This is a moving story of one girl's attempt to come to terms with her grief, told with humour and real insight.

From the Author

The inspiration for Zelah actually came off a signpost on the way to Cornwall. I though it would make a good name for a character, so when I wanted to write something about a teenager battling with OCD, the name just kind of popped up again. OCD in adults is very much in the press (Justin Timberlake apparently has it, as does David Beckham), but thousands of children suffer the illness too. I wanted to tackle the issue with a liberal dollop of humour, so I created Zelah. The framework for the novel is actually the classic tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but rewritten for today's kids - you'd never know, unless you're particularly good at picking up on tiny clues!. Zelah's no Princess, even though that's what her father calls her - she can be a bit of a handful, as you'll see - but she's got a good heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read that deals with difficult issues., 14 Jan 2009
By Stefland (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a great read. At first you might think that a book about a girl with OCD might be a little heavy, but the author handles the subject manner in a light and humorous way without ever crossing into irreverance for any of the mental disorders that are described. So skillfully is this done that you find yourself smiling and laughing along with Zelah and her descriptions of her 'rituals' without ever losing touch of the seriousness of this condition for the people that suffer from it.
It's a great story and I am looking forward to further Zelah Green adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read Alert!, 11 April 2009
Zelah Green is fourteen years old and has a `little problem'. Since her mum died, she has become obsessed with rituals such as washing her hands over and over again, and not touching anything unless she has a tissue wrapped around her hand to prevent her getting germs. When it all gets too much, she is sent to stay at Forest Hill House, a place for troubled teens to try to solve their problems. There she meets a host of other teens with issues very different to her own.

This is a touching but humorous book that is very well written. There are moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that brought a lump to my throat. I cared about all of the characters, especially Zelah, and read it in only two sittings. In the spirit of the book, I'd say `Great Read Alert!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Zelah Green: Queen of Clean, 17 Feb 2009
This is a pacey and imaginative story of a young girl and the `little problem' that comes to dominate her life, told with great sympathy and insight and, above all, humour. Through the medium of fiction the reader is shown how OCD is based on fairly normal preoccupations with hygiene, multiplied to the nth degree. But the `issue' never sidelines the story and the characters. I was so keen to find out what happened next to Zelah, her friends and her family that I found myself keeping the book at hand in case I had a spare moment to read a page or two! It's nicely produced as well. The attractive, appealing cover contains clues to the story, and elements are picked out as nice illustrative touches inside the book. Roll on the next instalment! One question - is she pronounced Zellah or Zeelah?
