Unlike Robin McKinley, who usually doesn't add much to the tale except length, Donna Jo Napoli retells fairy tales and legends perfectly: she doesn't stray too far from the original, and most importantly, she ADDS something to it. These characters have depth and you really sympathise with them. Who else could make the wicked witch so likable? The writing is exquisite and you won't be able to put this book down. Read it. One more thing: it's not for younger readers. There are possibly disturbing descriptions of what Zel does after she goes crazy from being locked up in the tower. I am 15 years old, and I would recommend this book to anyone from age 14 up. Also, make sure you don't miss Song of the Magdalene and The Magic Circle, by the same author. I haven't read Sirena yet, but I'm sure it's good too. I hope Donna Jo Napoli writes more books as wonderful as these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zel 25 May 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as I am researching material for a show on the Rapunzel story. This book gives the story from not only Rapunzels viewpoint but the mother and the lovers too. A good easy read, recommended for teenagers and adults who are still interested in Fairy Tales.

This book created a mood like no other book I have ever read. Beautifully told, it gives you the physiological story of Rapunzel, the witch, and of course, Prince Charming who happened to be named Konrad. Zel is a wonderful character capable of charming the reader's imagination in 5 seconds flat. The mother is the villian, an interesting twist of fate. She, like all bad guys, keeps the pages turning. However, the lust and love between Konrad and Zel is what incaptivated me the most. The book is a straightforward read. I loved it and give it a thumbs up. HOWEVER, there is some objectionable material, though not graphic, that should be taken into considertion before losing yourself in the pages of this enchanting book.
