Synopsis

This cautionary tale of extramarital indiscretions finds a threatened and desperate wife lashing out in order to salvage a faltering marriage. An upper-crust couple living the high-life in post-'60s London, Zee (Elizabeth Taylor) and Robert (Michael Caine) Blakely's love-hate relationship is beginning to leave Robert longing for something more. Setting his sites on unassuming country girl Stella (Susannah York), Zee soon catches on and quickly begins scheming to bring the newfound romance crashing to the ground.

This film is gloriously kitsch in the very best possible sense. The eye shadow and the wigs and the haircuts are mesmerizing and the dialogue is bone-dry, relentless and genuinely funny. Taylor was born to play this role (one cannot help but believe this is who she probably really is) and she elevates the part and carries it on her own with just the right partner (bizarrely) in Caine. It is quite an unusual script and York's part fluctuates or slides from grown-up, intelligent and serious to sad, prissy and very irritating. In the end you want Taylor to put the boot in. Great film, stands many watchings. Buy it.

There are so many great lines in this film. Watch agog as Liz snorts with derision at everyone in her path ... her battered Capri, inspired "casting" ! I remember when I first saw the film at the cinema (Kings Road) with, probably, quite a gay
audience and everyone laughed out loud when she pulled up in this car, bright red with a HUGE dent in the side.
Liz oscillates from harridan to wounded baby bird, with hardly a breath between the two. Caine and York just sidelong players, both quite fitting the bill.
Margaret Leighton plastered in every shot in metallic afro-wig and vast sunglasses a revelation .. her best line, in response to someone who says "I thought you were you giving a small party ?"
ML = "Not a small party, just small people" ... ha!

Buy and watch and enjoy.

By The CinemaScope Cat TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Based on a novel by the Irish writer Edna O'Brien, who also did the screenplay, the Brian G. Hutton (WHERE EAGLES DARE) film focuses on a toxic marriage between a controlling but vital wife (Elizabeth Taylor) and her philandering spouse (Michael Caine) that reaches a crucial state when he falls in love with a quiet young widow (Susannah York). Taylor is pretty awesome here in one of her best performances, what one refers to as a tour de force (she won the Italian Oscar for best actress for her work here) and a force of nature, she is. Her Zee is brimming with life to an overwhelming degree so that you can see why living with her could exhaust you to the point that a passive young thing like York would seem like a life raft to Caine. Taylor's Zee is whizzing around to the degree that you're never quite sure if she's genuine in her sincere moments or her devious mind is clicking away, setting the stage for a grander plan. Caine carefully balances his performance, rising to Taylor's near hysteria in his scenes with her and tender in his scenes with York. O'Brien's clever screenplay is full of wit yet still delving into the untidiness of romantic relationships. With Margaret Leighton and John Standing.

The Sony DVD from Great Britain is an excellent wide screen (1.85) anamorphic transfer.
