3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but... 20 Dec. 2005
Clever idea and clever marketing with all the branded keysets for popular games now available. It works really well, I used it extensively with Battlefield 2 and found the big movement keys and placement of weapon and movement selectors to be useful. I wouldn't go so far to say it gives you a competitive edge though. For me, the biggest drawback is the placement of the normal keys. Massively multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft practically require you to "talk" to other people and if you're a touch typist like myself then you'll forever be hitting backspace (once you've found it) to correct your spelling because the layout is no longer ergonomic.
If I only played offline games then I'd give this 4 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware! 21 Dec. 2009
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I play World of Warcraft frequently, so I bought this and the Wrath of the Lich King insert.

Bad mistake on my part.

If you are unsure what the Zboard is, it is basically a keyboard without any keys. The keys are part of inserts that can be changed depending on which game or game type you are playing. A great idea in theory.

However, after about 2 weeks of using it the S key stopped working. Oddly though, when i took the keyset out, the rubber button that is the S key works just fine. Put the WotLK insert back in, and it stops working. I installed the latest updates and messed around with the settings, still wouldn't work. I put the bog standard keyboard insert in and it worked fine. Figuring it was a software glitch, I continued to use the working keyset, and kept testing the WotLK keyset after every update.

I'm writing this as the S key on the bog standard keyset has done the same thing, so after 6 months they still haven't fixed this problem. After looking on the internet, it seems this is a very common fault (although the keys that stop working are different each time, imagine not being able to use your space bar for example), that has been affecting people for over a year.

I've had to go back to using my original keyboard, until I can find something more robust and reliable.

I would recommend to everyone that you do some research before buying one of these.

I wish I had.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 13 Aug. 2009
By D.Jones
Verified Purchase
I Bought this item 2 days ago for a birthday present for my son so only got to install it today 13th Aug 09. The outer Amazon packaging was in very good condition as normal, but inside the Zboard main package was damaged and torn.

On opening the Zboard box, inside was the base keyboard holder, wrist rest and 2 keysets, there were no instuctions on use or installation media. After a few attempts searching the internet I got the latest drivers for windows XP 32bit and also windows 7rc 64bit.

Following the directions of the software installation it recommends connecting the keyboard before software continues, after finishing installing the software it requested a reboot.

This is now when the problems started, for one I noticed that the base Zboard was slightly warped and didnt sit properly on the desk and rocked back and forth as I tried to type. I say tried but no keys were taking effect, after a few attempts of inserting and re-inserting the key set it would only work after applying pressure on the top right of the keyset where it connects to the pins of the base. Soon as I let go the keyboard would stop working and the green icon in the windows tray would turn red. I tried the 2nd keyset that came with the zboard and had exactly the same problem, everything worked fine until I released pressure from the top right of the keyset, and yes before anyone asks I did clamp the keyset over on the far right of the board.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice for the powergamer 23 Feb. 2006

A great idea brilliantly implemented, the Zboard is a keyboard aimed squarely at the gamer. The build quality of the product is high and the interchangeable keysets really do give you an advantage in getting to grips with a new game - particularly if you purchase one of the custom keysets designed specifically for your game. Let's face it, no-one likes reading a manual to find out which key does what, and the Zboard does a good job of cutting that hassle right down. I would like to see a greater selection of keysets produced for more titles, but that would be my only criticism of a very fine product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indestructible 19 Oct. 2010
By Adam
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
After reading some of the reviews about this item i just had to add my own experience. I purchased my zboard (which i am using to type this review) when it was first released before it was taken over by steel which i believe was about 5 years ago now. This has been my primary keyboard since then. It's taken me through 5 years of high end World of Warcraft and endless programming.
I will say first off that i use the default QWERTY keyboard for everything. I used the FPS set at first when i played games such as Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Battlefield 1942 and found it good. I have no complaints at all but i can't say i found it a great deal better than a standard layout. Having said that i think i would switch to it if i was playing an FPS regularly.
Personally i'd recommend against getting the specialised keysets for various games, such as WoW. If you're serious about playing you'll learn the keybindings anyway since it's easier to use the shortcut on the keyboard than go all the way over to where the num-pad would be. But for a casual player i can see it might be good, still not worth the cash in my opinion.

Now the main thing i wanted to say about this item; it's durability. I was amazed at the reviews from other users who reported issues as i have had not one. Maybe i just got lucky or they were unlucky.
The construction is so simple i cannot see how it would fail, rubber 'stands' hold the keys up and will never fail like a mechanical switch, and the keyset on top is just plastic keys in holes, it's that simple.
I used this keyboard for 5 years of World of Warcraft and i will try to describe the use it endured in this time, since i would consider it way beyond normal.
