Product Description

· Vogue cover model turned singer-songwriter Rosie Vela's 1986 one and only album, finally re-mastered and reissued on its 25th Anniversary. Contains the UK Top 30 single and radio perennial `Magic Smile'.

§ Produced by longtime Steely Dan collaborator Gary Katz, `Zazu' reunited band members Walter Becker (on guitar) and Donald Fagen (on keys) to work together for the first time after a six year hiatus.

§ Brimming over with hypnotic melodies and elusive lyrics, Rosie's unique songwriting and deeply sensuous vocal scat singing style - blostered by the superlative musicianship of Becker, Fagen and co - mark this as a `lost classic' of West Coast adult contemporary rock.

§ Long unavailable in Europe and US, early CD pressings of `Zazu' has become highly sought-after by fans and will appeal to both Steely Dan completists and fans of Vela who sent the album into the UK Top 20 on its original release.

NOW BEING RE-RELEASED (ON 27 JUNE 2011) !! WELL DONE CHERRY POP !!

PERHAPS THE INCREDIBLE RESPONSE (139 "HELPFULS") TO MY ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS REVIEW, WHICH I FIRST POSTED ON 17 DEC 2006, HELPED BRING THE RE-RELEASE ABOUT - WHO KNOWS? ANYWAY, A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED POSITIVELY TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW EXTRACTED HEREUNDER. GO OUT AND CELEBRATE !!

"The other reviewers have already said it all - this album is truly a classic. A lost gem if ever there was one. So, while we await the re-release of this record on CD (which one day must surely happen), a practical bit of advice is all I can offer. The best known track "Magic Smile" is available on several good various artist compilations: just key in Magic Smile or Rosie Vela under the song title search facility to get the complete listing. If, like me, you want the whole album re-released, please mark this review helpful."

PS - TO ADD A FURTHER POINT OF INTEREST, ALL TRACKS WERE OF COURSE WRITTEN BY ROSIE VELA HERSELF. STEELY DAN PRODUCED IT, BUT SHE DID NOT NEED THEIR HELP TO WRITE THE NINE BRILLIANT SONGS THAT ARE ZAZU.

If you know who Becker and Fagen are ( The song writing partnership who are, Steely Dan), then there's a good chance you are into Music, well crafted songs and excellence of musicianship. If you are into that, you already have "Zazu". Becker and Fagen popped into the studio,to help Rosie recod this album... And they don't just pop into any old studio, for any old artist. no sir.

Vela crafted a life of ups and big downs, she lost her husband prior to recording this album, into a timless blend of sound, both origional, and thru the inspiration of fine artists before her, blending 80's technology and sounds, that have survived that decade well, with melody that becomes habit forming fast and origional lyrical perspective. She even uses words from her own lexicon-truely, ladies and gentlemen... non other can express it quite as she does - and she does, so well.
I own the vinyl album, and chastise myself regularly, for not buying the CD on it's brief release, but i have 12" singles from the album,so my loyalty is not in question.
"fool's Paradise" kicks the album off, Fagen's keyboarding identifiable here. This pacey, up-beat number takes you to the layed back and smooth-as-silk "Magic Smile". "Interlude" takes you on a Hypnotic passage thru weighty drum sounds and programmed sequencing, but retains soul and side one ends with a comercial fancy,"Tonto". Side two is just as impressive, Soul, Pop and Rock Weave "Sunday", "Taxi","2nd Emotion","Boxes" and the title track, a moody remarkable piece of work in itself, into 20'00''of fine material. In all,37'17" of pleasure. We want more, but Her work can mostly be found on other artists' material. She played keyboards for the Wilburys, amongst others and has recently appeared with ELO on "Zoom" and on the dvd of the same title, singing backing vocals and swinging her hips. The very tallented and insainely Beautiful, Rosie Vela ...Sorry Jeff, you'll have to share her!

Back in the early eighties Rosie Vela was just another aspiring singer/songwriter struggling to make a living on the West Coast of the USA. Her husband rented a studio and recorded a demo album of her songs intending to hawk it around the LA producers but he died prematurely before it's completion. Enter Walter Becker and Donald Fagan of Steely Dan who heard the demo tapes and immediately offered to record and produce her collection of songs, resulting in the classic album "Zazu".
Vela's songs capture all the warmth and vitality of the West Coast scene, superb melodies and catchy lyrics backed by the unmistakable instumental virtuosity of Becker and Fagan. UK readers will no doubt recall the only song released as a single from the album, "Magic Smile". The entire album consists of this laid back, feet up and listen style and it's such a pity that this was her only ever offering. If you love Steely Dan, you'll love this album.

A great album, I love it. Nothing else like it so no point in trying compare - not even to Steely Dan (which you might expect given the Fagen/Becker input). Enough of that though - the reason for my review is the sound. This new release has been boosted in level and the sound has become too insistent for my liking. I knew something was up as soon as I played it and getting hold of a mint used copy of the original pressing only reinforced that (my original is on vinyl). I checked this by a comparing rips of both in an audio editor and the limiting and increase in level can clearly be seen. It still sounds good but audiophiles will likely prefer the sound of the original which is still available used on here.

An idiosyncratic record quite unlike anything released before or since, Rosie Vela's one and only album finally sees the light of day again, twenty five years after its initial release.

Enhanced by the contributions of Steely Dan triumvirate Walter Becker, Donald Fagen and producer Gary Katz (and credited, at the time, with reuniting Becker and Fagen following their split many years previously) Vela is never overshadowed by her illustrious guests but strides, drawls and scats confidently through some of the coolest music ever to emerge from the West Coast. The fact that her lyrics are largely impenetrable, and often indecipherable, matters little.

She reportedly recorded a second album a few years later that never saw the light of day, and despite the occasional dalliance with the likes of ELO has now largely vanished from view.

A lost classic in every sense that simply demands to be heard.

What price now the belated release of that second album?
