Having bought the first Zatoichi Box Set & enjoyed the films if not the quality of the prints I was eager to see his further adventures so bought this box set even though I already owned zatoichi meets yojimbo in a Toshiro Mifune Box set.
As with the first box set I have to say the quality of the picture is not great, this is a real pity as the films themselves are pretty good. Meets yojimbo & meets the one armed swordsman are cross over films, toshiro mifune is always good value as his yojimbo character to see him in the same film with katsu shintoro is fun. This is less so with the one armed swordsman as I had only seen him in one film other than this & most of the film is played on a series of mix up with the chinese warrior in japan.
The other two films very much follow the same pattern as the other 'Ichi' films where he helps out the downtrodden by killing most of the local gangsters or local official or sometimes both for good measure.
These films on the whole are good fun, for all the sword play they really are not that gory and dont dwell on it,they were probably a lot more shocking in the past than now.
I came to Zatoichi in reverse having seen Beat Takeshi's version a few years ago, I am glad on the whole I did, only wish then quality of the discs were better as especially with ..meets the one armed swordsman it really was a struggle to see what was going on.
