From the beginning to the end of this book I was thinking: "Finally, there's someone who gives the real picture of Africa!" I am a traveller myself, but generally avoid travel books because authors tend to move too fast from one place to another and never satisfy me with a deep enough description of what the place they are describing is like. I lived in Africa between 2007-2009 and despite this book having been written nearly two decades ago, Anthony Daniels had me hanging off every single word he said, as I identified with what you really (and still!) encounter there. I think he focuses more on his interaction with people and simple observations of every day life transmitting a very vivid picture of how things are. He doesn't tire you with a long historic, political or geographical account of the country, yet gives a complete enough picture. I even found myself identifying with his mounting frustration, as he whole-heartedly sets off on this adventure, which slowly drains his energy and patience. Definitely worth a read!
