We use Lonely Planet guides a lot, but I will have second thoughts after this book!
Squashing Zambia and Malawi into the same book was a BIG mistake.
It might have been fine if the had simply put say Zambia into the first half and then Malawi into the second half. But what they did was to mix and merge the two countries throughout the entire book, often with no clear indication that they had stopped talking about Zambia and were now talking about Malawi.
This was confusing in the extreme and highly irritating.
It also meant that neither country country got dealt with properly.
I had taken the precaution of taking along a Bradt guide - a breath of fresh air! It dealt solely with Malawi and was everything the Lonely Planet guide was not.
The LP guide just did not give adequate information on Malawian basics, the country, the flora and fauna and the parks. The info was too sketchy and difficult to access when you wanted it.
I recommend avoiding it until they improve it drastically

I travel a lot, and always buy an LP text for where I'm headed. This, as with all LP publications, is informative, detailed and not without humour. A useful guide for all things Zambian and Malawian, and with the usual excellent historical background section.

My only gripe would be, having two countries scrunched into one book is a bit of a pain. At times its easy to read accidentally text for the OTHER one :)

But, still highly recommended.

Malawi 2 Aug 2010
By Peter
Format:Paperback
I bought the Lonely Planet book on Malawai and Zambia for my grand daugher who is now in 2010 volunteering in Malawi. The book is an excellent introduction to the country, its people and its culture. It gives advice on all aspects that visitors may not be aware of such as healthcare, money, wildlife and helpfully, a simple phrase book.
It gives an indication of their ways of life and in detail its geography and geology. A worthwhie purchase.
